A Darrieus turbine is a type of vertical axis wind turbine (a turbine that turns about the y-axis as opposed to the more conventional turbine that turns about the x-axis) that utilizes lift to rotate. These turbines create lift due to the airfoil shape of the blades. The blades cut through the air at an angle to create a pressure differential behind the blade, which propels the blade forward and causes the turbine to turn. There are three main types of Darrieus turbines, the eggbeater, the helicoidale and the H, both of which can be made with varying numbers of blades but normally have 2 or 3 because anymore after that decreases the efficiency of the turbine (images of the three can be seen below).

Kelly HackerWell hi everyone! Welcome to my blog (the first of it's kind for me!) My name is Kelly, and I am a junior mechanical engineering student at Case Western Reserve University. This summer, myself and a collegue will be working to install a new wind turbine system at the Case Farm. Check back often for daily updates on the progress of our project! Ta-ta! CategoriesArchives |
