Description: Even though Echinodorus schlueteri has been in culture for only a couple of years the plant has achieved a surprising distribution among aquarists. It must be one of the most suitable and recommendable sword plants for aquaristics, combining in an optimum way a decorative appearance, unproblematic cultivation as well a rapid multiplication. It is definitely adaptable to different living conditions. Good growth results have been achieved in both soft as well as medium-hard water, with pH-values ranging between 7 and 8. A nutrient-rich substrate enhances the formation of strong roots and, thereby, nutrient absorption, but the specimens also grow well in gravel soil. If nutrient deficiencies become visible (glassy leaf blades or bad growth in general), fertilization above water may also be conducted. The plants obviously seem to prosper better at low temperatures (22-25 °C) compared to high temperatures (up to 30 °C) which can also still be tolerated. Even though the species cannot be characterized as specifically demanding on lighting, one should nevertheless provide the plant with a free-standing location within the aquarium. Echinodorus schlueteri multiplies a lot through adventitious plants on inflorescences which regularly form under water as well.
