To celebrate Mickey Mouse’s 90th birthday, Sotheby’s is selling the first edition books of Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck at The Library of an English Bibliophile Part VIII. There rare books mark the debut of the cartoon characters and remind us of the creativity that Walt Disney brought to the early days of Disney Studios.
The book is estimated at £1,500 - 2,000. It is extremely rare as it comes with its dust-jacket
The first editions of Mickey Mouse books introduced the cartoon character to book lovers in Great Britain and the United States. The Adventures of Mickey Mouse Book 1 (1931) is about ‘Mickey Mouse, who lives in a cozy nest under the floor of the old barn’, as quoted from the book. In 1931, the first comic strip devoted to Mickey Mouse appeared and the book was published later that year. Unfortunately, there are a number of issues with the first American edition, including an issue bound in cloth-backed boards. Blue and red cloth spines have been seen. The board binding, as here, is scarcer.
Another Mickey Mouse book, Mickey Mouse And His Horse Tanglefoot (1936) is also for sale with an estimate of £700 - 900. The book contains numerous colour illustrations throughout, original red cloth with colour illustration laid down to upper board. It also contains its dust-jacket but worn at extremities with minor chipping at bottom edge, bumped and slightly rubbed.
Looking for something a little more fun? A 242 x 183mm Mickey Mouse pop-up book, estimated at £400 - 600, is also going to be sold in the sale. The book, titled Mickey Mouse In King Arthur’s Court (1933) has four colourful pop-up illustrations with full and partial page black and white illustrations throughout. It comes also with a dust-jacket with soiling, worn and bumped.
If you are a hard-core Disney fan, this lot is for you. The Collection of Five Mickey Mouse or Donald Duck Volumes (5 Vol.) tells the stories between Mickey Mouse and his friends Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy. Its estimate price is £150 - 200.
