dragged this collection home from my town's recycling bin. 1993 LC475 with 14" monitor and keyboard and mouse. before i venture into even trying to fire them up or open them up, does anyone have any quality info/experience with this model? thx!

First thing to do is open it up and see if the battery leaked/exploded. Post some pics! 
I have a little more time to add some color to my above post: The 475 is a neat little machine because it's a good performer (for a 68k Mac) in a really compact size. You can even swap out the 68LC040 with a full '040 for some floating point goodness. If you open the thing up and don't see any obvious damage to the motherboard, I'd go ahead and fire it up. The hard drive will likely no longer work, but with some luck it should still boot to a flashing question mark. Let us know how it goes!
It's the purple half AA sized thingy in the black holster - they've been known to leak or even explode their innards all over the motherboard. Yours looks just fine, in fact it all looks great. You even have what looks to be an ethernet card installed - you can get it on the internet!
Fire it up and see what happens! I'm pretty sure there's a power switch on the back, and the 'soft' power button is on the upper right of the keyboard. With luck that old Quantum 80 will spin up and boot!
Plugged computer section in, started right up with distinctive sound. Fan running. Just needs a light dusting.
was going to try the computer with a monitor that has vga and dvi inputs, but i believe this has other, and i don't have old style loose cables. any suggestions (apple monitor not yet fully working)?
so, battery is just a 3.6 volt lithium made in israel? is that original? and what does it power?
I'd wager that it helps retain the data for the date and time after the Mac has been switched off. Possibly also stores configuration data too. If you share a close up photo of the battery then we can confirm which type you'll need as a replacement.
From what I can see, it looks like this brand - which is a AA rechargeable.
You'll need to use a monitor with VGA input. (Modern monitors do not always work with the 512x384 resolution.)
The LC 475 has VGA output, but for some inexplicable reason Apple used their own 15-pin port up until about the introduction of the G3, so to use a standard monitor you will need to either find an adapter or hack the cable.
my dell monitor has a VGA input, but the connector is a different size. looks like i need an adapter for the output on the 475 before i can test the hard drive.

Thanks for that. You'll need a 3.6v half AA lithium battery. The replacement doesn't have to be the same brand and they're easy to find on eBay etc or from a local store.

The DIP switches are to define an output resolution, 1024x768, 800x600, 640x480 etc...

Also i'm not 100% sure but i think that the Macintosh will not start properly with no battery.

an update: i ended up selling the 475 recently. i like to provide a data point for others who may do the same. all inclusive price buyer paid was $320 (item, shipping, tax). gives an idea of possible value of yours. mine was untested and to competing ability.
