Starting later this month, Wisconsin residents will be getting new driver's licenses and ID cards that the state Division of Motor Vehicles touts as "the most secure in North America."

The polycarbonate cards feature laser-engraved black and white photos, making them difficult to counterfeit, the DMV says. Each card's photo will be integrated with the card, not applied in layers as is currently the case. DMV leaders say that generating the image in black and white will help those looking at the card to focus on key facial features "without the distraction or distortion of color."

Black and white ID photos are currently being used in New York and Virginia, the DMV says.

Other features to be included on the new cards:

  • The card feels slightly stiffer and makes a unique sound when dropped on a hard surface.
  • A raised signature, date of birth, expiration date, DL/ID number, U21 (under 21) until date can easily be felt and hard to copy.
  • UV ink highlights intricate Wisconsin artwork on front.
  • U21 is prominently displayed in red ink and printed in a vertical format.
  • Endorsements for commercial driving, including hazmat certification, are clearly noted.

Drivers do not have to get a new card until their current card expires.
