Fun with Andrew Loomis’ “Blooks”!

“Blooks” showing different expressions

I’ve had a blast drawing these faces with an aid of a book entitled “Fun with a Pencil” by legendary American illustrator Andrew Loomis. The book is a treasure trove of excellent instruction on how to get better at drawing. Loomis lived a long time ago (1892–1959) but his lessons are as valuable today as they were in his lifetime. No less than the god of painted comicbooks himself, Alex Ross, was influenced by Loomis! If you’re interested, you can download all of Loomis’ books for FREE (YES FOR FREE) right here.

These heads are called “Blooks” from the instructive character in the book called Mr. Blook. You can draw detailed heads like these by simply starting out with drawing a circle and then filling it up with shapes in the right places. The book is very easy to follow, so I’m quite sure you can also draw stuff like these in a short period of time.

If you do download Loomis’ books and draw some Blook exercises, please send your work to Frustrashow. I’ll post it here and see how we’re both progressing! 🙂
