about

ROK TICHA: Gabriela Vermelho's third solo album is full of unconventional original folklore-infused music!

Two parts, two different assignments and themes, one new album that is bound together by a strong folklore inspiration, background of creation, transformation and last but not least a strong authorial handwriting - this is the new album of musician, singer and composer Gabriela Vermelho - Year of Silence (2023).

Two different assignments, two different themes, but one authorial handwriting personified in the figure of the album's author Gabriela Vermelho.
The title of the album, Year of Silence, refers to the period of its creation, a year of covid that was unbearable and difficult for many. "Everything seemed to stop, but for me it was a period of calm and stopping, not only from the outside, but especially within myself, and I was lucky enough to still be able to do the work I love above all else, which is music." gives the context of the period of creation of most of the songs on the album Gabriela Vermelho. During this period Gabriela received two offers to compose music for a production and then a film, as she writes in the booklet of the record.
So why are they together on one new album? They bear the typical handwriting of both the author and the performer. Both the first part of the album comes from the dance-theatre performance Maruška (directed by Martin Dvořák) and the second half, which is the music for Morávek's film Bandits for Balada, both of these musical projects are strongly inspired by folklore, and both bear the author's and the performer's typical handwriting. Both projects are also strongly inspired by the theatrical subject and transformed into a film-musical form.
Gabriela Vermelho, in addition to the string instruments close to her heart, also tried out other instruments on the album, such as quitalele, electric guitar, lyre, or cowbells, and of course she connected everything with her full vocals and singing. The final mix gave the recording its final shape, for which Gabriela approached two big personalities - Alexey Charvat (Bandits for Ballad) and Ivo Viktorin (Maruska). Everything got a final, unusual and cohesive shape. And it is now in your hands. And do you know what is actually necessary? To listen to the album in your "year of silence", concentrated and, if possible, in its entirety. That's the only way it'll sound. Forget the confusion, the noise and the rush and listen.
