Plant spacing is based on the ultimate width of the plants. This figure is normally given as a range; for example, 3-5’. If you live in a cold climate and/or want plants to fill in more quickly, plan to space at the shorter end of the range. If you live in a warm climate, are on a limited budget, or are willing to wait longer for plants to touch, use the higher end of the range. Using the larger number is recommended when calculating distance from a building or structure. There’s really no such thing as "maximum spacing": if you don’t want your plants to touch, you can space them as far apart as you’d like. All plant spacing is calculated on center, or in other words, the centers of the plants are spaced one half of their eventual width apart:
Unless you are planting in a straight line, as you might for hedges or edging, space your plants in a staggered or zig-zag pattern for a more interesting and naturalistic look:

Rain gardens have taken the horticultural industry by storm, no pun intended. Here, Great Garden Plants answers all your questions about designing, planting, and caring for rain gardens.
The replacement willow arrived in the same sad shape as the first one. I planted in the ground but it has very little new growth. Other plants I ordered from different plant companies are in the ground and thriving. So not sure what’s wrong with the dapple willow plants.
Thank you for your feedback! We're sorry you're having trouble with your order. It’s surprisingly normal for newly transplanted plants to appear like they aren’t growing. That’s because most of the growth occurs below ground in their first year as they allocate more energy to root development. Once your plant is established, it will start investing more in shoot and flower development. To learn more about how plants “sleep, creep, and leap”, read our FAQ here: https://bit.ly/FAQ-plant-growth Our team of horticulture experts would love to take a look at the plants to further assess the situation, so please contact us at claims@greatgardenplants with your order number and photos of the plants. We look forward to helping!
Received just a sprig of a plant with very fragile small root ball. And for the price and shipping, I'm very disappointed. There's no way it would make it if I planted it in the ground where I want it, so I've put it in a larger pot and set it in the ground where I can tend to it. Hopefully it will get strong enough to plant next year. If it survives.
I'm sorry you are not satisfied with your plants!
We do note that all of our plants are young on each product page and on our plant sizes page (found here). The size and maturity of the plants varies widely depending on the time of the year you purchased and if they were recently trimmed. The important thing when it comes to purchasing plants, whether online or in a garden center, is that they have a full, robust root system, and that's what we prioritize in our greenhouses.
The more roots a plant has, the more energy it can put into growing once it is planted in your garden. We do keep our plants trimmed to encourage strong root development!

The replacement plants for the 2 that arrived dead were in great shape and all 3 are thriving.
I ordered 10 Dappled willow trees, but one if them is dying.

The small shrub arrived looking rather tired and without many leaves. Unfortunately, it hasn't done much better after planting. All other plants I've received from this company have all arrived in excellent condition and are doing very well. I didn't want to make a complaint because this was a free plant that was sent to me due to a mistake made in a prior order.
