Wycinanki with motifs characteristic for the region of Łowicz in central Poland, created by the folk artist Grażyna Gładka. Images via Na Ludowo on Pakamera.

Wycinanki are the traditional papercut artworks from Poland. They come in various regional types. Wycinanki have their roots in the old-Slavic ritual customs, and thus are sometimes referred to as the “Slavic mandalas” (particularly those round ones). The artworks seen above are examples of the symmetrical “Tree of Life” motif, with roosters symbolizing vital strenght and daily rebirth of the Sun. Check more examples under my wycinanki tag.
