Abstract

Rectal prolapse is full-thickness protrusion of the concentric rings of the rectum through the anal canal. Rectal prolapse can occur in isolation or in combination with multicompartment pelvic organ prolapse. A combination of history, physical exam, and pelvic floor testing can determine the goals of treatment and help in planning the surgical repair. A single best surgical repair for rectal prolapse has not been identified, and choosing the optimal surgical repair for a patient can involve many factors. This chapter outlines both perineal and abdominal approaches to surgical treatment of rectal prolapse.
