Vikin.gg was a Romanian organization that entered Dota 2 in early-2019. In late-2019, a new roster was signed, and would go on to dominate the Tier 3 scene in COVID-hit 2020. With the return of the Dota Pro Circuit in 2021, Vikin.gg established themselves as a dark horse in the Western European scene, but a disappointing end to the 2021 season saw them disband.

History[edit]

Beginnings with Chappie and Mastermind[edit]

Vikin.gg began as a loose stack in early-2019, making its debut in the DreamLeague Season 11 Europe Open Qualifiers, consisting of Mastermind, Chappie, pwN, ComeWithMe, eL lisasH. After an 8-month hiatus, the roster returned in September 2019, with Chappie and Mastermind joined by Rajjix, bOne7, Flash, and coach ImmortalFaith. The team's best result was qualifying for the DreamLeague Season 12 Europe Closed Qualifier, where they finished last. After this failure, the roster became unstable, with Chappie choosing to retire,[1] and the rest of the team shuffled to no avail.

A new roster rises[edit]

In parallel, Aramis wished to create a team of his own, and recruited Shad and Seleri. The team tested several midlaners and offlaners, eventually settling on Meepor (later known as "TANNER") as their midlaner, and trialists Crystallis and Tobi swapping between tournaments. Despite the team lacking much competitive experience, ImmortalFaith took notice of its talent and recruited the roster to Vikin.gg. This was the start of an unexpectedly-strong team, one that would go on to challenge even the established teams in Europe.[2]

The team's first tournament win was in SECTOR: MOSTBET DOTA 2 Season 1, beating several challenger teams in Europe and CIS, winning with a 3-2 win over EXTREMUM. By early-2020, Tobi had settled into the offlaner role, and after TANNER left for Ninjas in Pyjamas, the team recruited BOOM as their permanent midlaner.[3] With the COVID-19 pandemic in full swing, many online tournaments appeared to replace the Dota Pro Circuit, where Vikin.gg continued to do well in the Tier 3 scene, and putting up a strong fight against stronger teams in qualifiers. Vikin.gg's rise had not gone unnoticed, earning them a direct invite to ESL One Los Angeles 2020 - Online: Europe & CIS. Here, despite facing some of the continent's strongest teams such as OG, the current holders of The International, Vikin.gg put up a strong performance in the group stages, including a 2-1 win over OG. In the playoffs, despite having being placed in the Lower Bracket, Vikin.gg beat Alliance, Team Secret and Chicken Fighters, before losing 0-2 to OG to finish a very credible third place.

Their dominance of the Tier 3 circuit continued, with wins in SIGUL Pro League, SECTOR DOTA 2 Season 2, WePlay! Pushka League Season 1: Division 2 and Cyber.bet Cup: Spring Series - EU. The team later qualified for BEYOND EPIC: Europe/CIS and once again found itself in that awkward region between the established teams and contenders, once again beating OG but losing to Team Nigma and Team Secret in the Group Stages, forcing them into the Lower Bracket. Despite beating Alliance in the first round of the Playoffs, they ran into Team Secret and lost 2-0, yet another victim of Team Secret's dominant streak during the COVID-19 pandemic.[4]

With the team now firmly-established as a "Tier 2" team, Vikin.gg could focus on qualifiers and competing against the strongest teams. OMEGA League: Europe Immortal Division proved to be a setback, qualifying but once again being sent to the Lower Bracket and eliminated by Alliance. Vikin.gg bounced back to record their first Tier 2 win during BTS Pro Series Season 3: Europe/CIS with a 3-0 win over mudgolems, a credible 5th-6th placed finish in ESL One Germany 2020, 1st place in DOTA Summit 13 Online: Europe & CIS with an impressive 3-1 win over veterans Team Liquid, and 3rd place in EPIC League Season 2 Division 1.

Dota Pro Circuit 2021[edit]

In 2021, Valve tentatively-announced the return of the Dota Pro Circuit. Vikin.gg were one of eight teams invited to a Decider Tournament to determine the four teams who would play in the Upper Division, and the four who would play in the Lower Division. Vikin.gg comfortably qualified for the Upper Division with wins over Hippomaniacs and Chicken Fighters. However, the team's momentum ground to a halt, taking matches of teams not never really being able to close out the series, despite 2-1 wins over OG and Team Nigma, resulting in them finishing 7th and being relegated. Towards the end of the tournament, Vikin.gg began to try out Khezu to replace Tobi in the offlane, a move made permanent in April 2021.[5]

The team opted to go back to grinding smaller tournaments, once again picking up multiple 1st and 2nd places, including 1st place in EPIC League Season 3 Division 1 over Team Spirit. a fellow promising team. Vikin.gg then shrugged off their DPC disappointment with a 7-0 win in the Lower Division, a 3rd place in Pinnacle Cup and 5th-6th in ESL One Summer 2021, firmly placing them as dark horses to qualify for The International 2021 in the Western Europe qualifiers. Sadly, however, the team disappointed, losing 1-2 to OG and then 0-2 to Chicken Fighters (who had been relegated from the Lower Division). This proved to be the team's final bow, as Vikin.gg released the team afterwards.[6] After this, Shad joined Into The Breach, Aramis joined Alliance, and Khezu went to coach Quincy Crew for The International 2021. BOOM, Seleri and coach ImmortalFaith, however, chose to stick together and join Team Tickles.

Legacy[edit]

Vikin.gg is remembered as an inexperienced team playing flexible, aggressive Dota that was able to upset many established European teams in 2020.[2] They are also remembered for the sheer grind they took that year, playing in a staggering 30 tournaments in 2020 alone, winning many of them.[7]

Despite the disappointing end to the team, BOOM, Seleri and coach ImmortalFaith continued the spirit of the team when they joined Team Tickles. Together with dyrachyo, Ace and tOfu, the team finished second in Tour 1 of Western Europe in the DPC and were subsequently signed by Gaimin Gladiators, whose core of set players went on to become one of the strongest teams in 2023.

Vikin.gg made Dota fans all over the world fall in love with them not only because they are underdogs who managed to defeat strong opponents several times, but also because of their aggressive playstyle, tactical flexibility, and studying their opponent with care.
