Children’s Carnival: Friday, 09 February (10h30 - 13h00)

On Friday morning, thousands of schoolkids will be parading in their hand-made costumes through the city center (Avenida Arriaga). Who said Carnival was only for adults? A wonderful introduction and an event no to miss if you're visiting Madeira with your little ones.

Carnival Allegoric Parade: Saturday, 10 February (20h00 - 0h00)

It's party time!! On Saturday night, the colorful and vibrant float parade takes thousands of visitors and residents to the Center of Funchal. This is the main attraction of Madeira Carnival. Over a thousand parade participants will be dressed in eye-catching costumes in addition to a dozen exquisitely decorated floats. Let's face it - it's a lot of fun!

There is of course plenty of music and dancing - it's contagious! Try and resist dancing after a few glasses of Madeira wine or Poncha. You'll be impressed with choreographies that have been rehearsed for the last 12 months - since the last Carnival.

The “Trapalhão” Parade (slapstick parade): Tuesday, 13 February (16h00-19h00)

Just when you thought you're done with the Parades, there's the “Trapalhão” Parade (slapstick parade). This one is kind of more spontaneous and a less rehearsed one and it's open to all. So, get yourself a mask and just jump in. There's a lot of social and political satire, traditional themes, or just simply funny costumes. Whether you watch or participate in this parade, you will have a lot of fun. No doubt! The parade is taking place in downtown Funchal, but also in Machico, Camara de Lobos and Calheta

Street Entertainment

Downtown Funchal, in particular the central walkway at Avenida Arriaga, is captivated by the magic of Carnival during 10 days. There's plenty street entertainment events, including carnival music, performances and a lot of mingling. It's fun time to be in Madeira. Plenty to chose from the street stands. Our favorites? Madeira wine and poncha :-)

Theme Parties

Nightlife hangout spots also offers various themed nights, during the period preceding Carnival, such as "Hippies Night" and "Travesties Night". There's something for everyone. Take your pick!
