Ludwigia palustris is a stunning red stem plant worthy of addition to any aquascape in need of some high impact colour. Its fast growth makes it ideal for those wishing to practice their trimming techniques, as well as helping to prevent algae. This is an aquatic or semiaquatic perennial herb which grows in moist to wet to flooded areas. It is sometimes a weed.
They do require a high light intensity of 3 to 5 watts per gallon of full spectrum (5000-7000K) light.
This aquatic plant appreciates macronutrient fertilizers, especially phosphate and nitrate. Infusion of CO2 and other micronutrients can enhance both its growth and coloration. CO2 injection is not required for the cultivation of this plant, but can help it grow more robustly.
The Ludwigia Repens has very strong roots, so you can use almost any kind of substrate. However, it is better not to use sand, as this can suffocate the roots. Also, if your substrate does not have nutrients you have to consider using chemicals to “feed” the plant, at least in the first few months.
Pruning processes lead to its multiplication. Topping method is when you prune the stems and replant the severed parts into a rich substrate. You can also take some cuttings from its stems and replant in the substrate. Remember to provide enough spacing so they can freely propagate without being crowded and later creating a bushy look. Do the trimming when you see fit. You may also prefer trimming the excesses of the bushes for a neat and pleasant look. Cuttings will fall in the substrate to form multitudes of baby shoots that eventually create a new plant.
