Reykjavik

1 Visit

Reykjavik is home to a number of top-level teams and KR (it’s short for Knattspyrnufélag Reykjavíkur) are, historically, the most successful of the lot. But it doesn’t really matter how much glory you have in Icelandic football, the crowds are always going to be small and the finances limited.

And so, when I strolled off to find the ground on a mild day in March 2023 when we were in Reykjavik for a short break, I was not expecting very much. Even so, my expectations were not met! There was just the one stand and two sides of the pitch were separated from the road by cheap fences that would offer free views and a not too-inferior fan experience for those wanting save themselves a few Króna. The chant “Shit ground, no fans” has never been more appropriate for any top-flight European stadium I have ever visited. But hey, if I were given the chance to come back and watch a match here in this fantastic city, then yeah, I would jump at it.
