Chaetodon capistratus

Chaetodon capistratus, commonly known as the Foureye butterflyfish, is a small butterflyfish. Their body is white to pinkish and has a variable degree of yellow in it. Some individuals only have a yellow mouth and pectoral fins, others have a yellow belly and anal fin and some even have a high degree of yellow in their dorsal fin. There is a (faint) black stripe running through the eyes as well as all around their body from dorsal till anal fin. On their body they've many very closely spaced spots making it look like lines that form a backward V-shape. And off course the large black spot on their back just in front of the caudal base which gave them their common name.

These fish are quite peaceful to most other fish, but might haress similar looking fish. They live solitary or in pairs in shallow reefs. In an aquarium they can best be kept alone unless a proven pair can be found. They're real omnivores feeding on all sort of worms, but they're also facultative corallivores, meaning they do eat, but don't need corals. This species is known to eat Zoanthus corals, gorgonians and tunicates. This makes them a risk in a reef tank, but a perfect pick for a fish-only tank! Feed them a varied diet of live and frozen meaty foods to make them thrive!
