MANATEE COUNTY, Fla (TMX) - A father and his young son were recently rescued off the coast of Florida after being caught in a rip current, officials said.

In a video shared by the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, you can see marine deputies arriving to rescue the swimmers off the coast of Anna Maria Island on April 23. The father can be seen in the water holding onto his son, who is wearing a floatation vest.

Deputies pulled the boy and his father aboard the boat and ferried them both safely back to shore.

“If you do become caught in a rip current, you should remain calm and try to swim parallel to the shore to move out of the current and then alert someone if help is needed. Fighting the current makes the condition worse,” the sheriff’s office wrote alongside the video on Facebook.

“If you understand how rip currents form and the proper escape technique, your chance of survival, if caught in one, is greatly increased,” the sheriff’s office said.
