Why is Anfield not being used for Euro 2028? Liverpool’s iconic stadium misses out to inner-city rivals Everton

Plans are underway for the UK and Ireland to host Euro 2028 but several historic stadiums have missed out on staging games.

UEFA confirmed the decision and ten grounds have been selected, scattered across England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

That list doesn't include Liverpool's Anfield, but Everton's new ground has been included, which will be a bitter pill to swallow for Reds fans.

And the exclusion has left fans baffled.

Why isn't Anfield being used at Euro 2028?

Situated in the heart of Merseyside, Anfield is a fabulous ground that holds just over 54,000 people.

It's currently undergoing an expansion that will take its capacity up to 61,000.

This is bigger than a few of the other grounds selected.

However, Anfield was never in contention to host any games because of the pitch dimensions.

UEFA state that all stadiums that host tournament games must measure 105m by 68m at a minimum.

Anfield measures 101m in length, meaning the pitch is four metres too short.

This is a huge shame and Liverpool will have to watch on as Everton host Europe's best international teams.
