Hamas released a statement Wednesday defending university encampments where students have been demonstrating against Israel.

Columbia University, New York University and Yale University students have all held protests to demand their schools divest from companies perceived as profiting off the Israel-Hamas war. The New York Police Department (NYPD) has arrested hundreds of demonstrators after the presidents requested help clearing the campuses.

Hamas, a designated terrorist organization, attributed the arrests to President Joe Biden, claiming he operated without the “slightest sense of shame” by infringing on constitutional rights.

The American administration, led by President Biden, violates individual rights and the right to expression, and arrests university students and faculty members because of their rejection of the genocide that our Palestinian people are subjected to in the Gaza Strip at the hands of the neo-Nazi Zionists,” Hamas said, according to a translation by Avi Mayer, former editor in chief of the Jerusalem Post.

NYU accused its protesters of threatening school safety and security while displaying “antagonizing,” “disorderly” and “disruptive” behavior. The students have tended to support a progressive approach to the war by advocating for a ceasefire during the demonstrations.

“Today’s students are the leaders of the future, and their suppression today means an expensive electoral bill that the Biden administration will pay sooner or later,” Hamas stated, according to the translation.

Biden has supported a ceasefire to allow humanitarian aid to reach Gaza civilians. He also signed an aid package into law on Wednesday that provided Israel $26 billion.

“The Biden administration, which is a partner in the brutal war on our Palestinian people, does not want to acknowledge that it is before American public opinion that discovered the truth about the Nazi entity and sided with human values and decided to stand on the right side of history,” Hamas purportedly said.

Thirty-six percent of Americans supported sending military assistance to Israel, according to a March Gallup poll. Thirty-four percent opposed it. The U.S. has insisted American soldiers will not enter Israel, although the Biden administration has sent other military aid to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
