Phytomedicine is a branch of medicine that is practice across the globe and can not be underrate. It is a branch of medicine that specialize in treating patients with plant materials such as the roots, leaves, fruits, flowers and bark. The aim of this study is to investigate effects of hydroalcohol extract of Englerina drummondii Balle ex Polhill & Wiens (mistletoe) leaves from avocado trees on prolactin and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) in female wistar rats. Twenty female wistar rats weighing between 160g to 180g were used for this study. The animals were divided into 4 groups, with five (5) rats per group. Group 1 (control) were administered 5ml/kg of distil water, group 2 received extract 100mg/kg, group 3 extract 200mg/kg, and group 4 extract 400mg/kg. The distil water and extract were administered through gavage at 08.00 hour once daily for 28 days. Our study revealed significant increase in prolactin (0.69 ± 0.01*) when extract of 100mg/kg was administered and significantly decreased in prolactin (0.23 ± 0.01) when extract of 400mg/kg was administered to the animals. Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) significantly decreased when 100mg/kg of extract (0.24 ± 0.01) was given and significantly increased when extract doses of 200mg/kg (0.78 ± 0.05) and 400mg/kg (0.80 ± 0.03) was administered respectively. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS version 24 and ANOVA, p < 0.05 was significant.

Evaluation of the Activity of Some Plants Extracts on Thyroid Gland Regulation in Female Albino RatsThis study sheds light on various drugs of plant origin which have shown action on thyroid and its functioning as well as on the various factors associated with thyroid dysfunction. Therefore, the aim of this study is to determine the activity of the aqueous extracts of Fucus vesiculosus, Coleus forskohlii, Curcuma longa L., Rosmarinus officinalis L., Camellia sinensis L. and Melissa officinalis L. in regulation of thyroid hormones in serum taken from rats. Fifty-seven female albino rats were divided into 19 groups, each group with 3 rats, and treated orally with an aqueous plant extract in three different doses, except the control group which was treated with normal saline only. Also, a histological study was conducted on the thyroid gland after short-term treatment with different doses of these extracts. The results demonstrated that 5mg/kg of Curcuma longa was the most powerful extract which increased T3 level in a rats serum by 25% compared with the control treatment. Also, the ...

Comparative Clinical Study to Evaluate the Efficacy of an Herbal Drug with Thyroxine in the Management of Primary HypothyroidismBackground: Hypothyroidism was the first endocrine disorder to be treated with replacement of the deficient hormone. Initially animal glandular extracts were used. Synthetic LT 4 is widely available today, as its Na salt in multiple strengths between 25 ug and 200 ug, and is the therapy of choice. The absorption is 80% in fasting state decreasing to 60% in the fed state. Desiccated thyroid, an animal preparation containing T 3 and T 4 in a ratio of 1:11 is still available but rarely used. A combination of T 3 and T 4, 12.5 ug of T 3 and T 4 is available and may be useful in minority of patients. Traditionally, the tablet is given in the morning. The half-life of serum T 4 is 7 days which allows a single daily dosing. 1-5 The goal of treatment of hypothyroidism is the restoration of an euthyroid state in all tissues. This is usually achieved in patients with primary hypothyroidism by restoration of serum TSH concentrations to normal. The average full replacement dose is 1.6 ug/kg/d with interindividual variation. Requirements for infants and children are higher. 2,6 Though hormone replacement therapy has proved effective in the management of Hypothyroidism, but owing to adverse effects on long term use, the need to search for effective herbal drugs from the treasures of Unani system of Medicine(USM) for the management of Hypothyroidism was felt by the Researchers of the field and a herbal drug Commiphora mukul (Muqil) 23-27 which has shown positive thyroid activities in experimental animals was selected to check its comparative efficacy with thyroxine. Hence a clinical study titled 'comparative clinical study to evaluate the efficacy of an herbal drug with thyroxine in the management of primary hypothyroidism was designed.

Changes in Thyroid Hormone Concentrations after Administration of Ashwagandha Root Extract to Adult Male Mice1998 •
The importance of ashwagandha root extract in the regulation of thyroid function with special reference to type-I iodothyronine 5′-monodeiodinase activity in mice liver has been investigated. Although the root extract (1.4 g kg−1) administered daily for 20 days by gastric intubation increased serum 3,3′,5-triiodothyronine (T3) and tetraiodothyronine (T4) concentrations and hepatic glucose-6-phosphatase activity, hepatic iodothyronine 5′-monodeiodinase activity did not change significantly. Furthermore, ashwagandha root extract significantly reduced hepatic lipid peroxidation, whereas the activity of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase and catalase were increased. These findings reveal that the ashwagandha root extract stimulates thyroidal activity and also enhances the antiperoxidation of hepatic tissue.

Abstract: Background: A number of medicinal plants are traditionally used for metabolic disorders in Bahia state, Brazil. The aim of this study was to evaluate the estrogen receptor (ER) and thyroid receptor (TR) activation of crude extracts prepared from 20 plants. Methods: Species were extracted and assayed for receptor activation through both ER and TR gene-reporter assays, using 17 -estradiol and triiodothyronine (T3), respectively, as the positive controls. Results: Cajanus cajan (Fabaceae), Abarema cochliacarpus (Fabaceae), and Borreria verticillata (Rubiaceae) were able to activate ER as much as the positive control (17 -estradiol). These three plant species were also assayed for TR activation. At the concentration of 50 g/mL, C. cajans exerted the highest positive modulation on TR, causing an activation of 59.9%, while B. verticillata and A. cochliacarpus caused 30.8% and 23.3%, respectively. Conclusions: Our results contribute towards the validation of the traditional use of C. cajans, B. verticillata, and A. cochliacarpus in the treatment of metabolic disorders related to ER and TR functions. The gene-reporter assay was proven effective in screening crude plant extracts for ER/TR activation, endorsing this methodology as an important tool for future bioprospection studies focused on identifying novel starting molecules for the development of estrogen and thyroid agonists.
