Haugesund’s unusual city hall has often been described as one of the most beautiful buildings of its period in Norway. Paid for by a local shipping magnate, the 1920s structure has an all-pink facade that lends it a wedding cake tone, while tall columns add neoclassical seriousness. In addition to the building itself—said to be the world’s only pink city hall—the surrounding gardens are a big draw. Nearby, the family-run Kyvik herring factory is open to those curious about the pickling process, and just outside town, the Haraldshaugen is a soaring stone obelisk built in 1872 to commemorate the unification of Norway under King Harald Fairhair in the 9th century.
