Volvo's first V8, built by Yamaha, is now available in the XC90 for 2005. The new engine displaces 4.4 litres and develops 311 hp. The new 6-speed automatic transmission is mated to a Haldex AWD system that features Instant Traction. What this does is pre-load the AWD system with 80 Nm of torque with a valve that prevents a complete drainage of hydraulic fluid.

There are only a few visual differences between the V8 and regular models. They include specific 18" wheels, twin exhaust pipes and body-color moldings.

Price: About $65,000
Availability: June 2005

Auto123.com's impressions:

Volvo was doing fine without a V8 but if it really wanted to sell more trucks, it did not really have a choice. With 60% of their sales being State side, this shows that even 80 fairly successful years of production can be swayed to change by the American demand for more power.

Volvo XC90 PUV SEMA Show Truck

The XC90 PUV, for power utility vehicle, receives a host of upgrades that include the compulsory lowered suspension, super wide rubber and wheels, a full body-kit complete with it with mega-flared wheel arches. The word on the street is that the PUV spits out 650 hp, 10 hp less than the awesome Ferrari Enzo.
