Lavon Mary (Sir) Hyberger went to heaven surrounded by her family on December 17, 2023, after a courageous, hard fought 38-year battle with breast cancer. To say that Lavon was a warrior is an understatement – she fought tooth and nail right up to the very end. We are so proud of her and will miss her tenacity.
A visitation will be held at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel Stateroom on Thursday, December 21, 2023. A Rosary will begin at 4:00 PM, with the visitation following. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Pius X Catholic Church on Friday, December 22, 2023, and will begin at 10:00 AM. A visitation will take place a half hour before the Mass. Burial will take place at Mt. Calvary Cemetery Following the Mass.
Lavon Mary Hyberger was a Christmas baby, born on December 25, 1943, to Adolph and Edna Sir in the small northeastern town of Lourdes, Iowa. She was a farm girl at heart and enjoyed simple pleasures. You could often see her mowing on her John Deere tractor, tending to her garden and pruning her precious peach tree. She anticipated “the harvest” with the excitement of a young farm girl and would spend many hours canning peaches, tomatoes, and jellies to be shared with her friends and family. She also loved her feathered friends and had multiple feeders around her home so she could enjoy their company.
Lavon was a woman of strong faith and loved spending time with family. That journey started when she met the love of her life, Gary Hyberger, at a dance in March 1962 at the Elma Memorial Hall. They spent the evening dancing, and shortly thereafter went on their first date on March 10th. From that moment, Gary spent every waking moment at the farm with Lavon and her family. On June 8th, 1963, they were married at Our Lady of Lourdes Church and moved to Cedar Rapids, where they raised their four children. Gary and Lavon loved attending their children’s activities, and the kids knew if they looked out into the bleachers, they would find mom’s beaming face in the crowd. Dad was the rock but, mom was the foundation. We could count on her for everything and knew she would be in our corner. She enjoyed hosting and was an excellent cook. We have many fond memories of our family Sunday dinners and holidays throughout the years partaking in a lot of food and laughter.
Lavon held a special place in her heart for her grandchildren. She was warm, loving, and was quick witted. She often had “gray haired” moments at which the grandkids would tease her. She was a good sport and able to laugh at herself. She was a great listener and would spend hours just chatting and laughing with them. The grandkids loved her, and she will surely be missed.
Lavon spent 34 years in the banking industry starting at Morris Plan. She survived many mergers as MorAmerica was purchased by United Securities Savings Bank in 1988, and then Ohnward Bank purchased USSB in 2006 where she retired as a Vice President. She loved her “work” family and after retirement would go out to lunch with “The Fab Four” (Lynda, Emily, and Crissie). A special thanks to Lynda, Emily, and Crissie for supporting our mom at the Especially For You Walk every October to raise money for breast cancer awareness.
Lavon is survived by 2 sons, Kevin (Tacy) Hyberger, Jeff (Pam) Hyberger, 2 daughters, Lana (Mark) Poole, Dawn (Rob) Krousie, 11 grandchildren, Ashley (Abel), Logan, Jared (Jules), Alex (Corey), Derek, Kyle, Courtney (Dane), Camille (Addison), Cade, Presley (Charlie), Mallory, 2 sisters-in-law Pat and Jan, 2 nephews, Jim and Tom, and 2 great grandchildren, Calvin and Harvey.
She is now reunited in heaven with her loving husband (Gary), her parents (Adolph and Edna), her brother (Adolph), and brother-in-law (Clark) as well as countless other family members and friends who went before her.

The family would like to thank Dr. Sagers and Dr. Wilbur for all the love and support they showed Lavon and her family while she was in their exceptional care. The Hyberger Children are forever grateful.
