Max-Morlock-Stadium revamp feasibility study

The 2. Bundesliga club 1. FC Nürnberg and the City of Nuremberg recently presented the long-awaited feasibility study for the total transformation of the Max-Morlock-Stadium in Nuremberg, Germany.

‘kicker’ stated that the study – undertaken by the Frankfurter GmbH ‘Proprojekt’ (consultant in Frankfurt, Germany) – recommends further development of the entire area as well as converting the above facility into a soccer-specific stadium and the bringing together of other sports such as athletics, American football and more by setting up facilities in the adjacent areas of the stadium.

The 1. FC Nürnberg or simply Nürnberg is a German association football club in Nuremberg, Bavaria, who currently compete in the 2. Bundesliga.

The 2. Bundesliga is the second division of professional football in Germany. It was implemented 11 years after the founding of the Fußball-Bundesliga as the new second division for professional football. The 2. Bundesliga is ranked below the Bundesliga and above the 3. Liga in the German football league system.

The 50,000-capacity Max-Morlock-Stadum is a stadium in Nuremberg, Germany, which opened in 1928. It is located next to Zeppelinfeld. It also neighbors the 10,200-capacity Nuremberg Arena. Since 1966, it has been home stadium to the German 2. Bundesliga club 1. FC Nürnberg. During the 1972 Summer Olympics, it hosted six football matches.

‘kicker’ further stated that the stadium redesign is to be done with the integration of the octagonal basic shape and the main grandstand façades but keeping the pristine sheen of the arena intact.

As per initial estimates, the costs for this would come to circa 200 million euros.

Nürnberg Commercial Director, Niels Rossow, spoke of a “very sustainable plan”. The octagon represents a “unique selling point” as per Rossow and should therefore remain. There was also a lot of interaction with the fans.

The home ground of Nürnberg is getting worn out and a renovation is the need of the hour. The City decided in January 2022 to commission a feasibility study, which was carried out in the last few months and was recently submitted.

Maintained Marcus König, Mayor of Nuremberg, “The feasibility study has been undertaken by Frankfurter GmbH ‘Proprojekt’. We would now like to take the feedback of the citizens. The final decision will then be made by the City Council, which will be a major player in the above exercise.”

The City Council is expected to reach a final decision latest by 2023-2024. If a final decision is arrived at, the totally transformed home ground of Nürnberg will be ready by 2030. It is likely that the second division club may continue playing in their home pitch while the revamp work is on.
