Description

Andrew Loomis is famous for a great series of how to - drawing and painting books. He also did some art for magazines and advertising. No idea what this piece was from or exactly when it was produced.

Artistically however - it's very bold and feels a lot like the Fleischer Superman Cartoons from the 40s.

If you know anything about the painting - happy to hear from you.

It's a very odd piece in that the central figures featuring a man carrying an unconscious woman is not out of the ordinary for the time period, yet the fact that the man is calm and the scne is occurring in the middle of a restaurant is what is somewhat confusing. Either way, it's always nice to see originals by Loomis!

That is a beautiful painting.   And it's one of those pieces that lets you use your imagination and make up your own story as to what is going on.

Your comment along with Rubin's would both be helped if we knew what this was used for.  LOOMIS was a commercial artist and this would have been used either to illustrate a moment in a story for a magazine. Or it was used in advertising. The lack of paintednon slogan however, makes me think it was used for some kind of story. It's a mystery until we find out.

One place to research illustrations is the digital clipfile in the special illustration collection at Washington University in St Louis- they have been digitizing the Illustration House files and it can be an interesting web colelction to go through- the major headache is that the best folks like Loomis had long careers and were prolific. From the image this looks like a story illustration but that too covers a huge area. I have had art (and still have some where i haven't found the publsihed version) that have taken decades to ID the source- good luck! ANother thing to try is www.tineye.com but that seems to work best with cover art or a google image search
