Kevin Connolly opens up about how he found out his then-girlfriend Nikki Cox was cheating on him with their Unhappily Ever After co-star

  • Connolly and Cox dated briefly while filming the series, which ran from 1995 to 1999
  • He recalled finding out that the former actress, 45, was having an affair with their costar, Bobcat Goldthwait, 61
  • Cox and Goldthwait went on to get engaged after the show and remained an item until 2005 when he found out she was cheating on him with a fellow comic

Kevin Connolly opened up about how he found out his Nikki Cox was cheating on him while they were filming Unhappily Ever After.

While talking about his experience as a child actor, the 49-year-old Entourage star recalled his first heartbreak, which happened behind the scenes of the sitcom in the '90s.

He said that breakup with the former actress, now 45, was the 'first time' he thought he was 'going to die', he admitted on an episode of the Hey Dude... The 90s Called! podcast released on Monday.

He told podcast hosts Christine Taylor and David Lascher that he was 'heartbroken' in the final years of the series, which ran from 1995 to 1999, after he found out his then-girlfriend was having an affair with their costar Bobcat Goldthwait, 61.

The director — who was accused of sexually assaulting a costume designer in 2005 — said: 'It was pretty terrible. Yeah, I was gutted. I couldn't sleep. It was one of those jobs.'

Connolly recalled how he and Cox played siblings on the '90s sitcom but began dating sometime between filming seasons four and five.

The series, Unhappily Ever After, followed the life of a dysfunctional family headed by a schizophrenic father named Jack, played by Geoff Pierson.

The dad had a close friendship with his son's talking toy rabbit, Mr. Floppy — a puppet voiced by Goldthwait.

Connolly said that he found out Cox was having an affair with Goldthwait 'a couple of days before the table read for season five'.

He said he received a distressing phone call from Jeremy London, who told him to check the news.

'[He] called me and said, "Kevin, get in your car..." He said, "Get in your car, drive down to 711 and open up the National Enquirer",' Connolly recalled.

'I get in the car and drive up the street,' he continued, adding that he had 'a knot in my stomach' before he 'started flipping through the Enquirer'.

'There's a picture of Bobcat and Nikki dating,' Connolly explained the moment he found out about the affair.

'And then the next day, or like two days later, I had to go into the table reading, and we had to just gut out 24 weeks of misery,' he said.

Despite their difficult breakup, the New York native — who welcomed his first child with his actress girlfriend, Zulay Henao, 44, in June 2021 — said he and Cox 'stayed in touch over the years' and still 'catch up once in a while'.

He also joked that Taylor, the podcast co-host who also happens to be his longtime friend, got to witness the 'Bobcat incident' with a 'front-row seat'.

After Connolly and Cox's split, she got engaged to Goldthwait, who is 16 years her senior.

The pair were engaged for about five years and together for a total of seven years.

Cox and Goldthwait never married and eventually broke up in 2005 after yet another love triangle.

In an interview with Dave FM's Jimmy Baron and Yvonne Monet in February 2010, Goldthwait recalled how their engagement ended when he found out Cox was cheating on him.

He detailed how he called a hotel to send Cox flowers and discovered she was staying in fellow comedian Jay Mohr's room.

Cox ended up tying the knot with Mohr, the star of CBS sitcom Gary Unmarried, in 2006.

They were married for 12 years before they divorced in 2018. They share son Meredith Daniel, whom they welcomed in 2011.
