What is Long-Nosed Whip Snake Bite? (Definition/Background Information)

  • The long-nosed whip snake (Ahaetulla nasuta) is a mildly venomous snake that belongs to the largest snake family called Colubridae. The snake ranges in size from slightly above 3 feet to over 6.5 feet in length. It is an arboreal snake meaning that it is generally a tree-dwelling reptile that is known to descend to the ground sometimes while hunting. The snake hunts during the day (diurnal) and feeds mainly on lizards (calotes and geckos), frogs, birds, small mammals (rodents), and other snakes
  • The long-nosed whip snake, also known as the green vine snake, is mainly found in southeast Asia including parts of the Indian subcontinent, across the countries of Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam. This snake is found in a wide range of habitats but mostly in well-vegetated areas at altitudes up to 8,200 feet (2,500 m), among bushes, shrubs, trees, and dense foliage, frequently near watercourses. It is also found near human habitation
  • The snake has a slender, compressed body with a long cylindrical tail. It has a very elongated and flat head with large eyes; the head being distinct from the narrow neck. The characteristic feature of the snake is its sharply pointed snout (and hence the epithet “long-nose”). The snake’s body is bright green in color with small black and white scale markings that may not be readily visible. Its belly is light green to yellowish. It may be difficult to spot the snake among the foliage - it may be mistaken for a green vine
  • The snake is usually slow-moving and tends to sit still or gently sway awaiting prey; although, it can move quickly among the tree branches, if needed. When threatened, the long-nosed whip snake can raise its curved forebody, open its mouth wide, and display black and white body markings by expanding its body. Since the snake is found above ground level on plants and low-hanging tree branches, it tends to strike at one’s head (eyes) if provoked, thereby earning it the misnomer the “eye pecker” snake
  • Human contact with the long-nosed whip snake is not uncommon, and bites have been reported. Long-Nosed Whip Snake Bites bite does not cause any significant envenomation in humans and fatalities are not reported. The constituents of the venom is unknown, but is informed that bites to one’s head may cause pronounced symptoms
  • There may be mild local effects at the bite site, including pain, bleeding, swelling, and numbness that subside within a few days. Significant systemic symptoms are not typically observed. The treatment may involve wound cleaning, steps to prevent secondary infections, and tetanus shots, as needed. Individuals with Long-Nosed Whip Snake Bites have generally excellent prognoses with proper treatment
