Cohr Denmark Silver Plate Tea Set, Hans Peter Jacobsen Tea Service,Danish Modern Coffee Service, Danish Silver,Mid Century Modern Coffee Set
This listing is for a stunning mid century Danish modern four piece silver plate coffee or tea service set. This stylish set was made in the 1950's by the Danish silver company, Cohr, and was designed by Hans Peter (H.P.) Jacobsen. The set includes a coffee or tea pot with lid, a water pitcher, a covered sugar bowl, and a cream pitcher. The set is electroplated nickel silver (EPNS) and the handles appear to be a hard black plastic, possibly Bakelite. The pot stands 9 inches tall to the top of the lid with a base that is 5-1/4 inches in diameter. The water pitcher stands 8 inches tall with a base that is 5-1/4 inches in diameter. The creamer stands 4-1/2 inches tall with a 3-1/8 inches diameter base and the sugar bowl is 3-3/8 inches tall to the tip of the lid and 4-1/4 inches in diameter at the base. All of the bases are hallmarked with "EPNS", the manufacturer's mark "Cohr", and "Denmark". All of the pieces are in excellent used vintage condition consistent with age and use. There is some light age related tarnish and a couple of water spots on the teapot and pitcher. There are some light surface marks on the pieces and some shelf wear on the bottoms. The interiors are all very clean and look practically unused. This is a stylish coffee or tea set that will make a great addition to your home for entertaining or just as decoration.
Hans Peter Jacobsen (1892 - 1973) was trained as a painter. After finishing school in 1911, he went abroad for four years. While in Italy, he met Danish architect, Martin Nyrop, and helped him refurbish the San Cataldo convent. Upon their return to Denmark, Nyrop helped H. P. Jacobsen enroll in the Academy of Art's School of Painting. In 1926, he joined Cohr's Silverware Factory as a designer, contributing greatly with his knowledge of form and aesthetics. He became known as an uncompromising perfectionist and was the artistic leader of the factory for four decades. He did much of the silver plate for Cohr, and made it into something truly competitive. Apart from his work at the Cohr Silverware Factory Jacobsen also wrote 14 novels. He is perhaps best known for his "Herregaard" flatware design, which was a huge success for Cohr and still produced today by Gense in Sweden.
The Carl M. Cohr Silver company was founded by Ditlev Cohr in 1860 and continued to make silver products up until it closed in 1987. It was Ditlev's son, Carl, that made made his mark upon the company. Despite traditional designs selling better, Cohr kept with a more updated look, hiring designers Knud V. Engelbert, Siegfried Wagner, and Kastor Hansen for the 1909 national exhibition in Aarhus, and later on creating pieces designed by Hans Peter Jacobsen and Hans Bunde. Hans Bunde designed for Cohr after World War II and after his training at Cohr, continued on to learn under Wiwen Nilsson, the leading Swedish silversmith. Afterward he went back to Cohr from 1951 to 1976 and became head of the one-off products. His designs were elegant and representative of Danish functionalism, unlike any other silver factory could produce.
