Here are the different ways you can tell someone is from Huddersfield without them telling you they're from Huddersfield.

1) Huddersfield Town for life

Huddersfield Town is the only football club in the hearts of locals, and thousands turn out for matches at the John Smith's Stadium to watch the team play.

2) Marston's Fried Chicken

They know for a fact that Marston's Fried Chicken is the height of culinary excellence worldwide.

3) Huddersfield? Where's that?

Anyone from Huddersfield is sick to death of non-locals not knowing where Huddersfield is. Huddersfield isn't near Leeds or near Manchester, its just Huddersfield.

4) House of York loyalists

People from Huddersfield may argue with their neighbouring cities like Leeds, but they're still Yorkshire and proud of it.

5) Red is not my colour

In the same vein, this means War of the Roses rivals Manchester are still looked down upon in the town. Please don't ask if Huddersfield is in Lancashire.

6) Kirklees? Never heard of her

Kirklees was first formed as a local council authority in 1974 and was named after Kirklees Priory, which is in Calderdale. However, people from Huddersfield have never been happy with the name and, as far as they're concerned, they're from Huddersfield only.

7) Going down to the Alfred McAlp... John Smith's Stadium

Many people in the town still refer to the local stadium as the Alfred McAlpine Stadium, after its original construction contractor. The stadium was renamed to the John Smith's Stadium in 2004, but who can keep up?

8) Everyone knows someone who knows someone who knows Jodie Whittaker

Jodie Whittaker was born in Skelmanthorpe, just a few miles from Huddersfield town centre and has been acting across British screens for years, most famously playing the lead role in Doctor Who as well as stints in Black Mirror and Time. Everyone in Huddersfield has a friend who has a friend who knows her, honest.

9) We all hate Leeds United

While certainly not unique to Huddersfield, there is a strong dislike for neighbouring team Leeds United in the town. This is an opinion shared with Manchester, Nottingham, Sheffield, half of London and most of the rest of the country outside of Leeds itself.

10) Can't go wrong with Merrie England

Most people in Huddersfield have stopped by a Merrie England coffee shop at some point, its a local institution.

11) Don't talk about the council

A lot of people in Huddersfield aren't too fond of the council, mostly because its called Kirklees.

12) Say it (in)correctly: U-D-D-E-R-S-F-I-E-L-D

Huddersfield natives don't pronounce the 'H' in Huddersfield, much preferring the 'Uddersfield pronounciation.

13) Primrose Hill... what?

It's not Primrose Hill, no matter what it actually says on the signs, it's actually Pip Hill. No, I don't know why either. I'm sure someone in the comments will correct me.

14) Town Centre blues

Sadly, Huddersfield Town Centre has seen a bit of a decline in recent years with the loss of stores like M&S and House of Fraser. As a result, frequent complaints about the closing of shops in the centre is a local pastime.

15) Town/City/Town/City

Huddersfield is one of the biggest towns in the UK, and so this comes with the usual debate over whether it should actually be a city. This is a long running one with people on both sides of the divide, so can spark debate among Huddersfield locals.

16) Jake Mangel-Wurzel

Every town has its local celebrities and eccentric characters and for Huddersfield, that was without a doubt Jake Mangel-Wurzel. He died in 2021, but if someone knows the name, then chances are they're from Huddersfield.

17) Huddersfield, do people actually live there?

People from Huddersfield won't miss a chance to list some of the famous faces from the town. From former Prime-Minister Harold Wilson to world-famous celebrities like Patrick Stewart (who may actually be from nearby Mirfield), Huddersfield has long produced world-class talent.

18) Planes, Trains and Automobiles

There are always problems with the transport in Huddersfield. Just in September, the town topped the charts for the highest rate of train cancellations in the country, and so many people in the town spend time complaining about the poor transport links.

19) Huddersfield Town's trophy cabinet

As previously said, the vast majority of people in the town are supporters of the local team, and any true fan will be able to tell you about Huddersfield Town's three-in-a-row First Division wins in the 1920s. The team may not have won many top trophies since, but its a proud record and it still counts.

20) Brown Cow Bridge

Scammonden Bridge over the M62 was always referred to as the Brown Cow Bridge after a pub. Now long gone, the pub remains in local memory.

21) Fish and BITS please

When you're getting fish and chips, you might choose to get some extra deep-fried batter. Lots of people call these scraps, but in Huddersfield they are bits, so make sure to get it right.

22) Post industrial moorland

Huddersfield was always a mill town and, as with everywhere else, the majority of industry in the town is now gone. While this conjures up images of decline, people from Huddersfield will make sure you know there is still plenty of beauty in the town, ranging from the Victorian buildings to the beautiful countryside, like the nearby Marsden Moor.
