The classification of this plant, along with almost all other 'Echinodorus' grown in the aquarium hobby, has recently been revised - these plants now belong to the new 'Aquarius' genus.

Aquarius 'Regine Hildebrandt', commonly known as Echinodorus Regine Hildebrandt, is a beautiful and colourful plant that can add bright red foliage to the aquarium. Unlike many other Aquarius cultivars, the leaves of this sword plant hardly fade with age, staying red under moderate and high lighting.

This cultivar is a hybrid of Aquarius 'Ozelot' and Aquarius 'Kleiner Bär' (not Aquarius uruguayensis 'Horemanii Red' as is occasionally credited). It can be considered a bright red alternative to Aquarius 'Kleiner Bär', and grows in much the same way, albeit slightly slower and smaller.

One of the features of this cultivar is that the leaves don't start growing directly from the rosette, but instead have a short stalk (petiole). The leaves are 10cm long and 5cm wide with a slight waviness. They grow with a blood red colouration in high light and good conditions, a deep red orange in moderate light conditions, and maroon brown in low light conditions.

Aquarius 'Regine Hildebrandt' is easy to care for. It is a hardy plant that can adapt to a wide range of water conditions, and it is not particularly demanding in terms of fertilisation or CO2 injection. However, for optimal growth and colouration, it is recommended to provide the plant with a nutrient-rich substrate, regular fertilisation, and a consistent supply of CO2.

Echinodorus Regine Hildebrandt is quite a small sized sword plant that usually doesn't exceed 15-20cm in height, making it suitable for both large and small aquariums. This bright red Aquarius is a plant that is sure to stand out as a display plant in any aquarium.
