The Red Hot Chili Peppers announced on Sunday that guitarist John Frusciante, who appeared on their most popular albums, will rejoin the band. Frusciante takes the place of his own successor, Josh Klinghoffer, who has played with the band for the past decade and appeared on their last two studio albums, 2011’s I’m with You and 2016’s The Getaway.
“Josh is a beautiful musician who we respect and love. We are deeply grateful for our time with him, and the countless gifts he shared with us,” the Chili Peppers shared in a statement on Instagram. “We also announce, with great excitement and full hearts, that John Frusciante is rejoining our group.”
This marks Frusciante’s third tenure with the band. He first joined the group in 1988 following the death of founding guitarist Hillel Slovak and remained until 1992; Jane’s Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro assumed the role from 1993 to 1998. Frusciante rejoined the band in 1998 and played with them until 2009, ceding the position to Klinghoffer. Klinghoffer had previously served as the band’s touring guitarist and worked on Frusciante’s solo efforts.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers enjoyed their greatest success with Frusciante. The guitarist played on their 1991 breakthrough album Blood Sugar Sex Magik, which sold over 7 million copies in the United States and spawned the No. 2 hit “Under the Bridge.” Their 1999 reunion album, Californication, sold over 6 million copies in the U.S. Frusciante also played on the group’s only No. 1 album, 2006’s Stadium Arcadium.
Frusciante is also a prolific solo artist, producer and collaborator, releasing 14 solo albums and playing guitar on several albums by progressive rock band the Mars Volta.
