Legendary 1967 Shelby Mustang GT500 Fastback Could Be Yours

In 1965, with the release of the 289 cubic inch V8 powered GT350, Carroll Shelby’s name was penciled into the not-yet-thick Mustang Book of Lore. By 1967, when the GT500 first arrived on the scene, with its monstrous 428 cubic inch Interceptor V8, Shelby’s name was set in gold.

Eventually, the 1967 Shelby Mustang GT500 Fastback would become one of, if not the, most famous Mustangs around. Part of that popularity came from being one of the most powerful road cars you could find back in the late ’60s. It’s widely agreed upon that the GT500’s original horsepower rating of 355 is on the conservative side.

The GT500 is also legendary thanks in no small part to the “Eleanor” driven by Nic Cage in Gone in 60 Seconds. And Doors singer Jim Morrison owning one probably didn’t hurt the car’s reputation either. Especially since Morrison famously crashed his on Sunset Strip, left the scene of the accident to get a drink at the next whiskey bar, and returned to find the car had disappeared for good.

This one being auctioned off on April 2nd by Auctions America isn’t Morrison’s missing GT500, but still, she’s a legend in her own right — one of only 2,044 built. Now you can drive her home, if you’ve got a spare $175k or so. That’s the high side of the estimate for this numbers-matching beauty with “original engine, intake, carburetor and transmission.”
