Zain Raj’s new book is The Pyramid Puzzle: Igniting Transformation with the Power of Trust. Mr. Raj’s book follows a trend many business and leadership advice books seem to be enamored by – specifically, a reexamination of the fast pace of the rat race. With increasing, digitized enhancements of workplace scenarios, remote meetings, a total overhaul of human resources issues (hopefully), and an overall reexamination of what the workplace means in an era after the Covid-19 pandemic, Pyramid Puzzle adopts a semi-fictitious, creative non-fictitious tonality. Raj understands the power of show, don’t tell. It’s a trap nonfiction narratives often fall into. The sort of excess of mandatory information, but at the expense of presentation and narrative effectiveness. Raj, however, in addition to competency has too much style to let this happen. “There are many sad stories of once-great-and-storied Fortune 500 retail companies becoming shadows of their former selves and disappearing from public view. These were companies that employed thousands or tens of thousands employees, were led by generations of families, and had scores of retail locations across America—businesses that were once so vital they played central roles in not only our country’s culture but in the lives of the families who regularly visited them to buy everything from food, to clothing, to tires for cars, to technology devices for the home,” he writes at the beginning of the book, aptly titled Forward/Invitation. “…When that trust erodes over time, it rarely can be restored, and a business that was profitable and successful for years and years dissolves into dust…Without trust, there is no confidence in the company, or loyalty to it, and soon the optimistic possibilities of what it can achieve turn into distant, cynical pipe dreams. But what would happen if a young, new CEO came in with a knowledgeable team, new thinking, and the energy and stamina to break the tide and right the ship? A fight between the old and new ways—and the older and younger heirs of the founder—would ensue for the very survival of the company.”

From this, Raj is able to present a narrative that feels equal parts akin to Trump and Bill Zanker’s Think Big and Kick-Ass: In Business, and in Life, and Joel Coen and Ethan Coen’s post-Cold War masterpiece The Hudsucker Proxy, starring Tim Robbins. The sentimentality never feels shoehorned in, ironically so it feels like part of the decided pragmatism Raj presents with equal emphasis. “There are critical lessons to be gleaned from such a heroic journey if we’re willing to listen. When we create and nurture strong relationships, make valuable, emotional connections, and build trust throughout an enterprise, anything can—and does—happen,” he writes, also stating. “…Why (were) (bad things) happening to a formerly respected and treasured enterprise? One word: trust. It had disappeared from the top, middle, and bottom of the company—and customers felt it, too, every time they dared visit a shabby, under-stocked retail location. In short, no one trusted each other: customers didn’t trust anyone in the stores; suppliers didn’t trust the merchants; workers didn’t trust their managers; their managers didn’t trust the management above them; and the strata of management above that didn’t trust the C-suite and the board.”

The Pyramid Puzzle by Zain Raj delves deep into a case study of one retail chain business of the USA and finds out what damaged them despite being a market leader in 1980s & 90s and what went wrong that dunked the business.
It’s a business-oriented book, however, narrated in a fictional way with characters and plots and dialogues. Once upon a time when Pyramid was highly successful and people even today basked in the glory of being a shopper there. Pyramid was famous for giving great discounts to its shoppers and still ran in profits. But not anymore…
Its shares crashed, competitors leveraged their tricks for their own usage, and it was jeopardized for prison labor. Another thing that worked towards its ruin was the negative attitude of the company towards employees and customers.
Given enough stuff about how it fell and landed in mess. Now the important question is, how it can reclaim its name and business back. To do that there is a team of a business teacher Joseph, who works for Skip – the new CEO of Pyramid.
Joseph’s immediate team members are Gabby and Sam (an Indian). The book has an Indian factor as Indian Hindu scriptures and mythology runs like banter in the book. From Sam’s Sanskrit insights, Joseph gets the idea of family. It means the business is a family for all – suppliers, customers, employees, and managers. They then set on to investigate the real problems faced by all i.e. family and listening to them can congregate them for a bigger unified purpose.
The connection of ancient scriptures to modern day business insights is fabulous and enriching. Can Joseph and Skip do something to resurrect the failing retail business of Pyramid?

Unique and fun with good lessons

Interesting and unique concept for a book! It reads like a young adult novel, but instead of teen romance and Scooby Doo-like hijinks, it's a college business professor, his student, and her boyfriend on a mission to help turn around a huge Walmart-like business that has been failing since the passing of the founder. I especially enjoyed the mingling of Indian mythology as well as sociology concepts into the business lessons and strategies. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed reading this book. Not sure who the target audience is though.. I can't imagine a serious upper-level manager reading this book, though the lessons contained in the book would probably do them some good. But overall, it's an enjoyable as well as a quick and easy read.

Audiobook: This was my first experience with Zain Raj's work, and I found it entertaining. The book opened with a man seeking guidance in how to improve his company's declining value by attending a lecture in business management at a college. The story was fictional. The characters were imaginary. The underlying themes featured were thought-provoking and presented in an interesting way. Daniel Greenberg's narration was good, and his performance kept my attention. I was given a free copy of the audiobook, and I have voluntarily posted this review.

Great lessons

Providing lessons in a fictional story can go well or go bad. For the author here, it went extremely well. A fictional company, stuck on profit only routines and apathetic culture, it is easy to see why the company growth, innovation, and customer/employee loyalty have stagnated. The author gives valuable lessons that this company learns throughout the tale. This means that we get to see great examples of situations we might all be dealing with and a possible solution that can turn the company back towards a better future. A great book!
