Renovation rendering of The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in downtown Lafayette.

Lafayette, LA – The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, an iconic historic building that has graced and defined the Lafayette skyline for more than 100 years, is in dire need of repair, and patrons are hoping to fund the building’s needs with a Historic Preservation Gala set for Saturday, November 18 on the grounds of Cathedral-Carmel School. The event will feature a festive evening under the school’s magnolias with delicious food from many of Acadiana’s well-known restaurants, live entertainment by The Good Dudes and a silent auction featuring art by over 20 prestigious local artists. Tickets are $100 per person and are available online at https://saintjohncathedral.org/preservation-gala . The event begins at 7:00 p.m.

The Cathedral completed Phase 1 of their preservation plan in 2021 which included replacing the hurricane-damaged tile roof and more than 60-year-old HVAC system at a total cost of $1.9 million. The primary goal for November’s Gala is to fund Phase 2 of the Cathedral Preservation Plan which focuses on the interior of the church. The original interior design of the Cathedral was completed in 1936. After modification in the 60s and 70s, the entire interior was repainted in 1984, almost forty years ago. This current renovation aims to revive original features of the historic Cathedral and also introduce contemporary design elements. This harmonizing of old and new reminds us of those who went before us, while their efforts seek to preserve the sacred space for future generations.

The full scope of this project will cost $2.5 million and will include:

  • Repair Interior Moisture Damage

  • Restore Plaster

  • Repaint Interior

  • Reinstall Altar Rails

  • Upgrade Lighting

  • Install New Sound System

  • Repair and Strengthen Pews

  • Preserve Stained Glass

  • Strip and Polish Floors

“The Cathedral and its historic landmarks are at the very center of our city’s history, both for Catholic families who have worshiped here and others who have come to know its beauty and significance. Whether you’ve knelt at prayer beneath breathtaking stained glass or simply paused to appreciate or photograph the intricate architecture, you know and love this building. I want to thank those generous patrons who have already begun supporting this great need, and urge all whose lives have been touched by this Cathedral to join us in preserving it for generations to come” said the Very Rev. Chester Arceneaux, VF, Cathedral Rector.

In the updated rendering, you’ll notice stars painted on the ceiling.  The Cathedral is offering a chance to name a star on the sanctuary ceiling in memory of your loved one or in honor of your family.  For more information, visit https://saintjohncathedral.org/name-a-star
