Unity Mitford

(1914 - 1948)

One of seven siblings, Unity Mitford first became interested in Adolf Hitler through her sister Diana’s soon-to-be husband Oswald Mosley, leader of the British Union of Fascists. She met the Führer for the first time in 1935, and by 1937 there were rumors in British magazines that she might marry him. On September 3, 1939, Neville Chamberlain announced that Britain was at war with Germany; that day, in Munich, Mitford shot herself in the head with a pistol. The wound left her an invalid, and she died in 1948.
