It's very slick at what it does, and is probably the most technically polished platformer out there for the Amiga - it's also very playable and it deserved its high ratings, but for me it lacks character and individuality. It seems as though Team 17 took all the cliches about platformers they could think of (cute cartoon animal protagonist, collect coins, collect fruit, forest world, castle world, Egyptian world) then concentrated on making it as technically smooth as possible - and there's nothing wrong with that. But it simply never held my affection or attention for more than 20 minutes because it doesn't have the atmosphere, individuality or character of Fire & Ice, Sleepwalker, Turrican 2, Harlequin, Trolls or the slightly quirky Hoi.

I never played this when I first had an Amiga, but got into it later on. But having discovered it, I really like it: it's not the most original platformer by any means, but it does what it does so well and with real polish. One of the best platformers on the Amiga, better than Zool and maybe Robocod as well?

Not perfect, controls and motion are just a bit off, but this is a great game.

Hyped but bland. Yes it is smooth, but gameplaywise it is boring. The level design is poor. Team 17 tried to jump on the soincexploitation bandwagon. But the result is forgettable.

Team 17 produced the best original arcade games for Amiga systems. Not only in graphics (as Psygnosis did) but in gameplay too. Superfrog is in top 3 Team 17 games definitely.

Arsace. I couldnt agree more. The flatness you speak of is what i call the Team 17 Effect. They're so overrated and this game is no exception. Most of their games stink in my opinion and just have a sheen of demoish crispness that seems to trick most Amiga users into thinking that they actually made good games. I know it sounds harsh but just compare their games to the console counterparts. Body blows - Street fighter, Assassin - Strider, Superfrog - Mario. They just dont compare in anyway. Some people, wrongly, say that the amiga wasnt designed for these types of games but most of the flaws are down to uninspired and sloppy game design. Sams Journey on the C64 is a far better platformer than any on the Amiga in terms of level design and enjoyment. I give Superfrog 4 out of 10 for being slightly easy on the eye.

In a very overcrowded genre, this is the slickest example (with Aladdin) and one that immediately impressed. The 'floaty' jump is a touch unsatisfying though.

UPDATE: In my view the comment/criticism above about comparing T17 games to the console counterparts ("Body blows - Street fighter, Assassin - Strider, Superfrog - Mario" ) is flawed, and demonstrates the value of T17 quite well. For Amiga owners, the most relevant comparison is THE AMIGA versions of games like Street Fighter 2 and Strider, which are absolutely shocking. Thank goodness the T17 efforts existed! Superfrog is more like Sonic than Mario and compares pretty well to it IMHO.

One of the few exceptions I make for platformers, Superfrog is excellent in nearly every respect - technically superb, smooth, easy to control, with secret areas, nods to previous games and what have you.

What is not so great about it? Well, perhaps a certain lack of personality and charisma. It's possibly the "best run-of-the-mill" platform game to ever appear on the Amiga, with yet another generic anthropomorphic animal in an even more generic environment. Sure, the animated intro is fantastic and hilarious (product placement aside, but I guess that can be forgiven), but in the end it's a parody of a fairytale, with not enough to define the game and its characters. With such a fine game behind them, they would have deserved to become iconic, unique.

For the record, I don't think Mario or Sonic are the best examples of that: they're only iconic because their publishers were also the respective console manufacturers and had the firepower to push them into the market. Look at what Earthworm Jim managed to do with an anthropomorphic worm and a damsel in distress: no comparison, it could very well be the most successful attempt in that department... And on the Amiga? Well that's what Zool tried to achieve and failed, and where perhaps Chuck Rock came the closest.

Superfrog is just a generic jump and run platformer. Bonus, secret passages and every other stereotype of the genre is here. At least, it is a very well made platformer. It has very smooth scrolling, the smoothest on the amiga maybe, beautiful graphics, very nice soundtrack, quick and entertaining action. Controls are as good as they could be with just one fire button. Unfortunately it has some game design flaws (dying on a spike after being blocked or slowed by a baddy is a flaw) but at the end of the day it is an excellent platformer for the Amiga (7/10).

I've tried it so many times but it never caught me, there is a disappointing sense of coldness and flatteness I can't explain, that doesn't make me want to progress in it. It's that same almost void and flat sense you feel playing assassin special edition or full contact, everything is polished but that's it

A nice game marred by poor level design and only average gameplay.

It really was trying to be Sonic on the Amiga but fell quite short of the mark.

Even to this day it is massively over hyped by Amiga fans.

Superfrog has a fun intro, cute character-design, nice-enough graphics, and good music, but it's marred by the title character's VERY strange momentum (or complete lack of it, more accurately). He moves at full-speed the second you move the joystick - and, of course, the game uses the dreaded Up-to-jump tradition, making pulling off jumps while trying to deal with other movements much more difficult than it needs to be (in-air movements feel pretty strange and too fast, as well, which can lead to issues). The jumping issue, at least, is improved greatly by playing in an emulator and mapping Up to a button, instead.

Superfrog's sidekick/weapon, Spud, is useless, incidentally - it's near-enough impossible to actually hit enemies with him!

Also, for some utterly bizarre reason, the game was sponsored by the energy drink, Lucozade. I'm probably not the only person who found it odd, and I also suspect that I'm not the only person who never really associated a sports drink with princes transformed into superheroic frogs! (Indeed, in a parodical remake of the intro, Eric W. Schwartz lampooned the product-placement - [www] . )

Anyway, it's a solid enough game, though not one I find to be as spectacular as some seem to. It isn't of horrendous quality, though, so if you like platformers and can persevere with the odd momentum of Superfrog himself, you may very well like this.

Top-of-the-Notch platform action at it's best.

And the supersmooth scrolling while offering high resolution fullscreen display overrates any of it's competitors like Mario or Sonic with ease.

Despite the many folks claiming it overhyped I think it is an often underrated classic being hidden to many by the fact they just don't know Amiga Gaming Highlights while constraining themselves to SEGA and / or Nintendo.

This is one of the games that shows which hardware set had the most to offer regarding 2D Gaming. Furthermore it didn't even touch the true capabilities of the AGA chipset in the CD32 Conversion ..

Finally I completed this game today :-)
Together with Mario, my favorite "classic" platformer ever! I could never get into Sonic, I enjoy SF much much more. My girlfriend loves it as well.
It certainly has its flaws, but I like the character, I like the size of the sprite (yes, I don't like platformers with huge sprites like mr nutz etc) and it's full of secrets and traps.
mapping a second key to joy up in winuae certainly helps (I like to use "up" for directing the spud, and a second button for jumping), and surely I will build a joystick that maps one of the buttons to joystick up for my old A1200 :-)

This one that i love, i don't understand people that say its too difficult, i think its perfectly playable. Music is great though the lucozade plug is a bit annoying, i think superfrog could have been a mascot for the amiga, but the game was too late. The secret areas are fun and sometimes frustrating in other levels, but its all good. The levels are well designed and the difficulty is just right. Just for anyone that is discouraged emulating this, its possible to finish the game with only a keyboard, the spikes in the last level are harsh but possible without autofire ive managed it before

It still puzzles me why Superfrog never became the Amiga mascot, like Sega had Sonic and Nintendo had Mario. It may not be the best platformer (athough it comes close) ever made but it is by the far the best that was made for the Amiga. There is so much I like about this game, the graphics are some of the best that were ever seen on the Amiga: beautifully bright and detailed and it runs at a constant 50fps. The only thing which is better than the graphics is the music, it really is worth playing this game just to listen to the music. In fact you look forward to getting onto the next world not so that you can advance onto the later stages but so that you can hear the next soundtrack. As for gameplay, well it's your basic platformer, you run jump and collect things to move onto the next stage. The levels are very cleverly designed in my opinion, all worlds start off with an easy straight level to get you used to it and as you advance in the world they begin to get harder and more complicated to the point that some are like mazes. However some can be frustrating and have hidden trap doors where you'll find yourself back at the beginning or back somewhere and repeating all the hard parts you struggled to get past in the first place. I only have one negative thing to say about this game and that is the spikes. The spikes if you land or touch them mean instant death, and some are placed in places that is just evil. This is my favourite game of all time and I think it always will be

This game's popularity mystifies me. Sure, the music is catchy and the graphics are smoothly-shaded (albeit lacking in character and devoid of technical effects - they didn't even bother with a copper gradient in the background!), but the level designs are unfair and the controls are PAINFUL. The spacious opening levels are tantalizingly fun to explore, but any hope for lasting appeal is obliterated by the later worlds, which are cramped and loaded with cheaply-placed hazards (including the ever-present instant-death spikes, which somehow manage to kill Superfrog even when he approaches from the side), blind spots, and leaps of faith. This would be annoying even if the controls had been executed with a shred of competence, but Superfrog simply runs too fast, jumps too high, and is generally a mess to move, especially since he's wigglier than Bubsy the Bobcat when airborne. Superfrog could (and should) have been a great game, but these ridiculous design flaws cripple it completely. As for those who say that it's good "for an Amiga game", I can name ten Amiga platform games off of the top of my head that put it to shame, along with giving even the best on the consoles a run for their money.

And what's so great about the intro? It's well-animated, but it's so pointlessly drawn-out that it had me falling asleep.

[This comment was brought to you by Lucozade. Drink it!]

This game is alright though honestly nothing special, the game seems to be made by someone wanting to create a Sonic alternative, but who doesn't really understand why Sonic works, you can't have a game with loads of speed unless you have a forgiving energy system (a la rings that you can recollect) otherwise the player will keep running into oncoming objects, instant kill spikes are a totally bad idea as it forces the player to effectively slowly move forwards until they have the levels memorised lest they repeatedly run into hazards they can't see and die. The graphics are pure 8-bit in detail and looks and are seriously under-using the Amiga hardware, the characters are also very crudely animated. Music is repetitive and annoying as hell, in fact for the most part it sounds as though someone's made a (bad) joke soundtrack for the game. Even with all these flaws though the game is still kinda' alright, I think realistically it's in the "above average" category as you can definately have fun with it.

Extremely polished and enjoyable platformer that's huge, great-looking and contains loads of secret bits. Nice touches abound, including a shoot-em-up level that's a 'tribute' to Project-X and a bizarre fruit machine sub-game but some of the level design is a bit iffy in that someone thought it would be a good idea to include hundreds of leaps of faith and spikes that kill you instantly, as well as sometimes being hard to tell what enemies can be killed and what can't. Still great fun and will keep you occupied for a long time regardless.

Fantastic platformer. Nice cartoon graphics, great music (Allister Brimble never ceases to amaze me), simple-to-use and addictive gameplay, and very well-designed levels from beginning to end.

The difficulty changes ever so suddenly in the middle of the game, I feel. The first 3 worlds are pretty easy, but the last 3 are really difficult. As soon as I get to world 4 I immediately lose a whole bunch of lives.

The addictiveness and enjoyment of the game keep you going though. I love it!!

You run in a wall, the wall falls and you enter a secret room. You think this is it when in fact this secret room opens on tons of other secret rooms. This game was pure genious. Better than Mario in my humble opinion. The worlds were perfectly drawn, the handling was perfect and the difficulty was well set. In fact, the only problem was that you had to start the game over and over because you had to find all the secret places and all the gold. Don't care for the princess, just have fun !

Superfrog is one of those rare games that is greater than the sum of its parts. Right from the outset the typical Team 17 symptoms rear their ugly head - no parallax, rubbish collision detection and the annoying habit of updating sprites at half the refresh rate of the scrolling (I'm looking at YOU Project X and Body Blows).

Throw in poor level design, the absence of any bosses and an appalling jump mechanic and you have a game that by rights should have been bargain bin fodder.

However there's no denying the game does have a certain undeniable charm - maybe it's the fantastic music - but I couldn't put this down until I completed it; even over a decade later I still like to play a level or two. It's no Mario, but still an Amiga classic and worthy of any collectors attention.

What do you expect from a good platformer? What should a good platformer be like? This game is a jump-n-run! Jump-n-runs were originally made for younger people! E.g.: just take a look at Mario.

...however...

This game has a cuddly character, fine drawn graphics (colours are chosen well, motely levels, many fine details), froggy music, many many levels (i think there are like 25..), secret rooms and passtroughs, lovely animated enemies, the gambling machine after every level and last but not least a fabulous intro and outro. Technically this game was state of the art and playing this game made and makes fun!
I don't like that some of you say this game is childlike and because you overlook that this game was made with much effort. Team 17 made a good job (as always). Just tell me: is there another game that was as well thought out as Superfrog, or one that has lovely graphics, animations, genial music, a funny intro and outro? Name just one game that has more attributes than Superfrog!

I'll admit after playing (in my opinion one of the best platformers on the Amiga - The Newzealand Story) my search for a platformer of similar playability was still undampened even after playing so many bad to mediocre ones.

Superfrog has a solid feeling of quality to it.. And whilst not as playable in my view as TNZS it rates as one of the Amigas most polished games ever.. However as I'm marking on playability it gets a 7/10.

It's quite interesting to see that people have this intrinsic tendency to dub as "bad" anything with which they do not agree. I have a grudge about jumping by pressing up because the Amiga hardware had a second button option and it often went to waste. In rare exceptions (like BC Kid) the second button option to jump reveals itself to be a great feature that has a huge influence on the joy of playing. And as about comparing Superfrog to Sonic, I'm not to fault here. Everyone has been doing so ever since the beginning. Just read the comments bellow. Now, I stick to my review of Superfrog. For me, it's NOT the magnificent game everyone keeps claiming it is. It's clearly over hyped and overrated, maybe because good platformers were rare for the Amiga. I have considerable experience with other platforms, but still the Amiga is my favourite one due to emotional reasons. But the fact that I have played many games in many platforms gives me the ability to have a different perspective on things. If you cannot understand why I say the things I say about Superfrog, you're either suffering from that mass denial thing that I spoke about or you're just too immature.

Saying this review sucks is a bit blunt is I may say so.

I think it is written in an excellent way. Keeping the reader curious about what the reviewers problem is with the game.

The reviewer didn't write it is unplayable. Basically what is being explained that the game could be perfect when physics were taken into account.

Personally I can agree with the physics findings but they do not bother me to that extent. The weapon I agree upon; it is poorly implemented.

I'm the author of the second review of Superfrog posted here at Amiga Lemon, my thoughts about it are expressed there. This small comment serves as an addendum. There are several small and forgivable errors in the review, most of them typos, but there is one that I didn't notice before and that I just couldn't let pass. In the "playability" field, the first phrase reads: "The Achilles knee." when it should, obviously, read: "The Achilles heel."

Yes! This is the one. My most favourtist platform game ever and (in my opinion) the second best game ever after sensi soccer.
You can keep sonic the hedgehogs and mario, Superfrog is far more enjoyable.

Brilliant brilliant brilliant game! The only thing that was a bit crap was the snow level that was too hard and frustrating.

I loved this game immediately. Sonic for the Amiga? Yes...but the Amiga did this game justice, or should it be that this game did the Amiga justice.
Very smooth scrolling, loads of hiddens, and trees that reach to the freakin moon, if you climb high enough! The inter-game "bandit", for non British peeps, "Slot Machine", was a waste of the programmers time, and mine. Reminds me of the 'catch the fish' bit in "NEBULUS". Still, with half a meg, 32 colours, nice sound, and a "give me one more go", playability, it will suffice!

All this talk of Sonic vs. Superfrog is misplaced. The game does borrow heavily from both Sonic and Mario and doesn't live up to either. But remember people, this is the Amiga we are talking about here and on that platform this was the creme de la creme of jump and run games. Technically a tour de force, with super soft scrolling and colourful graphics, and some solid (if not always brilliant) level design. Would I have preferred a direct port of Sonic or Mario? Sure, but we don't always get what we want.
And it also had the stupid up is jumping design flaw. Damn them for that.

Superfrog is the most over rated game in the whole AMIGA history.
A mediocre collage of elements copied by the most important (and famous) japanese games, Sonic the Hedgehog in particular (wich is, I never understood why, the most influent game on the european school of the genre after the 1991), without quality or, simply, something personal.
To say the truth, the only "personal" feature that Superfrog adds at the platform game stereotypes, is an horrible and absolutely anonimous graphic style.
Boring and derivative level design (with some major structural errors, such as impossibility to see what there's below you after a jump, for example), jerky controls (with an innatural implementation of the inertia, wich transfrom every surface in ice, even when your are supposed to run on grass or stone...) and complete lack of interesting situations are only few of its weak ponint.
Very bad, bad, bad, bad game. The best platform games on the AMIGA remains Mr. Nutz and Ruff'n'Tumble.

Yes, do not mention this game in same sentence with Sonic. Sonic was extremely innovative and splendid while Superfrog is "just" another fine platformer. There is simply nothing innovative or new in Superfrog. Or is a gambling between stages a new thing? It is not very special. A problem with the game is that when player dies, he always die by spikes. Enemies take some energy too, but player never runs out of energy. Of course, the game is also too easy to complete, but this is a common problem with most of platformers. The game is good and well made, but it has nothing special. Introduction cartoon is a nice addition.

I get annoyed when people mention Sonic when talking about Superfrog. The games really ain't that similar at all. And besides, Superfrog is far more playable than that overrated Sega crap. Gorgeous visuals, smooth full screen scrolling, superb music and great gameplay. Easily amongst my all time favourite games.

I remember my first impression when I saw this game: average. Then, by accident I inserted disk 3 instead of disk 1 into the drive. I was amused with the introduction. I decided to give this game another try. It was worth it. The best Amiga platform game ever. Sometimes it is worth to make a mistake

There were so many great platform games for the Amiga and here's another one! It's just so addictive. Even my missus who rarely plays anything non-Pacman related will play this - and that's high praise indeed!

I especially like the level design. Many arcade-style games just throw an ever increasing number of enemies in your face as you progress in order to up the difficulty - but not Superfrog! Intelligent level design, beautiful graphics, catchy tunes and a hidden level (Project F) make this the best platformer I've ever played.
10/10.

It was a long wait, but at last Superfrog leaped onto the screen and performed the stunt I had wished for so long: a perfectly balanced, colourful and fun platform game on par with what the consoles had. OK, so you had to gamble for level codes but at least they were there - any save game option is better than none!

I know someone will hate me, but I didn't like SF so much. I never liked this kind of platforms... I never had old consoles with Mario and Sonic an thought that computer users simply didn't need this kind of games. So: good graphics and music, and SFX, but in my opinion consoles platforms like Sonic or Mario are much better... For anyone who likes those games.

This game was the only game my friend Henrik and I was playing in Sweden when the Amiga computer was the "ONE" and only machine for games like this... One of the coders, Andreas Tadic is Swedish and together with a english team they made a very good game. This game is done by "Team 17" and they didn´t make a bad game during the Amiga "era". I love this game.. Great and colouring graphics, fantastic music, great playability and variarity in the levels.. Maybe it's not so hard to play it.. But it's fun and the levels are pretty large anyway. This is my favourite Amiga game really.. I keep this very high

Looks very LemonAmigaish......but don't let that put you off :p :p

It's a very good platformer that quite rightly wasn't trying to be too Nintendo/Segaish.
