Documentary to help you catch up on the Hillsborough tragedy

Hillsborough

The Hillsborough Independent Panel analyzed the tragedy during their report released in 2012.

(12:35 ET: Updated now with news from today’s report)

You are going to hear a lot about the Hillsborough Report today. It’s an emotional subject for people in England and most especially for supporters of the American-owned Liverpool Football Club.

The Hillsborough Report is the highly anticipated findings from an independent panel that investigated the 1989 disaster in England, which took the lives of 96 Liverpool fans.

Obviously, no one should ever die because they went to watch a soccer match.

But there’s so much more to this one thanks to some early, reprehensible efforts to essentially blame the tragedy on drunken, rowdy fans. Vindication and justice took years, and some supporters are still rightfully looking for more of the same.

If you’re a little late to all this, allow me to recommend a just-released BBC documentary event around the 1989 FA Cup semifinal at Hillsborough. It was shown over the weekend in anticipation of today’s report.

Warning: it is only 30 minutes, so it’s not something that necessarily needs to be set aside for later viewing, when you have the time, etc. However, once you begin, it is powerful stuff – and it’s hard to walk away. Be sure you have those 30 minutes.
