Reviews for the Zepto Znote 6214W

For the non-gaming tasks, we compared it to the previously reviewed Dell Latitude D620 which uses a dual core 2GHz processor, but is a few hundred pounds more expensive. Battery life is probably the most disappointing area of this notebook but not enough to be considered poor. It managed two hours 24 minutes in general usage and one hour 50 minutes in DVD playback. This is certainly good enough for use on the train, but we’ve come to expect a little bit more from Intel Centrino branded notebooks. PC Mark gave a very misleading overall PC Mark score, having a higher score than the Dell. However, this was artificially boosted because of a considerably larger graphics score. In reality, this graphics score doesn’t affect 2D performance much at all. The only other area that this machine won was in memory tests – probably because the graphics processor is not sharing the system memory.

A newcomer to the pages of PC Pro, Zepto is a Norwegian laptop builder with ambitions this side of the North Sea. The Znote 6214W represents the mid-point of its flagship Znote range, and the 1.66GHz Core Duo T2300 and 1GB of RAM means it fits the bill perfectly as a mid-range laptop. It proved fast enough in our application benchmarks, returning an overall score of 0.87 - more than enough to be your main PC. Unlike most system builders, Zepto decided to send in a bare machine, so we needed to install Windows before we could run our benchmarks. You'll need to pay the extra £52 for Windows XP Home, or £86 for Windows XP Professional; or, of course, you can buy the Znote and install another operating system of your choice.

NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600: The NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600 is a middle class video card of the 7000 series and suited for games of the year 2006. The performance is very similar to ATI X1600 / X1700. Compared to the desktop 7600 it is clearly slower.

Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.

Intel Core Duo: Double Core processor with a very good relation of performance to current consumption. The 2 MB L2 Cache are used together by the double. The maximum capacity of 31 watts is only 4 watts more than with the Pentium M (predecessor). Both cores are lowered automatically and independently of each other by speed steps down to 1 GHz. In addition it now supports also SSE3 instructions. At least it is just as fast as a equivalent Pentium M. With applications, which were designed for multi-processors, the performance can be nearly twice as fast as with the Pentium M (e.g. CineBench around 86% fast)

14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.

The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.

In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.

Zepto: Danish Zepto was established in 2002 with the purpose of supplying information  technology products for Mobile Electronics and Digital Home. Today Zepto is Europe’s largest local manufacturer of notebook PC’s (if you count the producing factories in Turkey to Europe) and is represented in 19 countries. Zepto is a small Danish laptop manufacturer with a low market share in Europe. Starting with 2007, some laptop reviews for Zepto notebooks have been published, especially in Central Europe.

77.33%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
