Jack White Directs Dead Weather’s Alison Mosshart in Instruction Video

"I have so many ideas while I'm driving," singer says in clip, which also features "Lose the Right" performance

For Dead Weather‘s Alison Mosshart, lyrics often come to her while driving. That’s what she reveals in a behind-the-scenes video directed by bandmate Jack White. It’s the fourth and final video in a series of clips the band has released focusing on each band member’s technique and approach.

The 7-minute black-and-white video features Mosshart driving and discussing her lyrical inspiration. “I have so many ideas while I’m driving,” she explains. And while she later says she’s not condoning driving and writing (“It’s similar to texting and driving” and “dangerous”), she says that a lot of ideas come when she’s on the road, particularly the highway.

Since the Dead Weather is not always in the same room when working on songs, Mosshart says that she listens to the music her bandmates send her while in the car and the lyrics begin to come, mostly as single lines, rather than full lyrics, which she fleshes out later.

The video, which also boasts surreal-looking clouds and a hedgehog cameo, culminates in the full band performing “Lose The Right,” from their third album and first in five years, Dodge and Burn. In the clip, the band is surrounded by piles of tires and figures in body stockings, some of which later surround Mosshart as the song builds.

The first video in the Dead Weather series highlighted Jack White and gave a stripped-down look at his drumming along with details on his drum kit. Bassist Jack Lawrence broke down his technique on Dodge and Burn‘s “Mile Markers” for the second installment, and guitarist Dean Fertita’s instructional video discussed how the band crafted “Let Me Through” for the third video.
