The arena was built by the city of Trondheim and was inaugurated in 1947. In the 1960s Lerkendal was renovated, but then nothing was done with the facilities for 30 years. Therefore the stadium in the end did not reflect Rosenborg's status as a European top club at all.
Rosenborg realized that they had to do something with the situation. The club bought the arena from the municipality of Trondheim, and with prize money from the UEFA Champions League a entirely new stadium was built. The running tracks around the pitch were removed, and new stands were raised.
In October 2002 the New Lerkendal Stadium was inaugurated, and a new era begun.
