Best Locs Moments Throughout History
Dating all the way back to 2,500 BCE, dreadlocks, or locs, have rich and complicated origins; one that has no definitive timeline and identifiable birthplace. The style is a result of entangled locks that matte up after a long period of time of not brushing or combing out the hair. For carefully styled locs, it takes diligent upkeep and maintenance — and yes, that means regularly washing them.
The first mention of locs in literature can be found in India’s Vedic scriptures, according to Dr. Bert Ashe, author of Twisted: My Black Chronicles. Historians have found evidence of the style throughout various points of history including amongst a wide range of cultures including ancient Egyptians, Germanic tribes, early Christians, the Aborigines and the New Guineans, and many more, as reported by CNN.
The term "dreadlock" itself comes from Rastafarianism, a religious movement and set of conventions born out of Jamaica in the 1930s. At the height of the 1970s, locs were commonly seen in the black community as a symbol of cultural pride. Ever since, locs have become a mainstay in the mainstream. In celebration of dreadlocks and their rich history, here are some of our favorite locs moments in popular culture.
