Emojis have become such a staple of daily conversations that one example, the face with tears of joy, was named word of the year by Oxford Dictionaries in 2015.

Not everyone, however, is happy with the messages they convey. A 10-year-old boy has launched a petition calling for Apple to change the “nerd” emoji that he says gives the wrong ­impression of glasses-wearers.

Teddy Cottle, from Oxfordshire, ­decided to write a letter to Apple requesting the design be changed and asked his classmates and his French teacher, Lisa Bailey, to sign it. She suggested ­instead that it should become a petition and it was launched on petitiononline.co.uk.

“I didn’t like the name or the design so I decided eventually in a geography lesson that I
