Barnsley is a fairly large market town which is situated in South Yorkshire situated close to Sheffield, Manchester and Leeds. It has held on proudly to its rich and industrial past with several films having been made here which encompass the fortitude and resilient character of both the people and the town.

With excellent road and rail links and Leeds Bradford Airport a little over twenty miles away, travel to other major towns and cities is straightforward. Barnsley is approximately 180 miles from London with an average rail journey taking around three hours.

Former industries include glass and textile making but it is probably more known for its coal mines. A prominent mining town which certainly witnessed its fair share of disasters, it has a long standing and ongoing tradition of brass bands which once typically consisted of the colliers. These days, many people have heard of the highly acclaimed Grimethorpe Colliery Band which was formed in 1917 during World War One by colliery workers as a leisure pursuit. Over one hundred years later, it is much in demand and performs to huge audiences all over the world.

There are opportunities in many sectors in Barnsley which include education, health and care, IT, retail and manufacturing and construction. Barnsley has a strong and dynamic long term vision which is incorporated in its exciting Barnsley 2030 strategy. There have been several recent and significant investments in the town which supports the continued economic growth of Barnsley and it is continuing with its transformation of the town. Barnsley has been so successful in its endeavours that the regeneration scheme and prestigious award wins have been highly praised.

On the edge of the Peak District, Barnsley has some really beautiful countryside with wonderfully diverse landscapes which include a network of trails, routes and paths to explore, including the Trans Pennine Trail.

The town centre boasts an award winning market, dating back many centuries and has many unique stalls to browse. Fantastic shops, including the new, exciting and ever popular Glass Works retail and leisure destination and numerous wonderful places to eat will ensure a great day of both retail therapy and relaxation.

There are several extremely interesting museums and galleries in Barnsley which include the Elsecar Heritage Centre where you can see what it was like to live and work in Victorian times and the Cannon Hall Museum which is a majestic historic house set within scenic parklands.

Barnsley has over 175 parks and playgrounds to enjoy! Locke Park is popular with families as is the stunning country park adjoining Worsbrough Mill Museum. Monk Bretton Priory, which was founded in the 12th century offers visitors the chance to see the splendid remains of a devoted Cluniac monastery.

Education standards in Barnsley are of a high standard with many schools rated as outstanding in the town which is excellent news for families who are also seeking a good neighbourhood. There are a variety of both rural and urban homes available and Barnsley offers fantastic value for money when searching for a home.

Perhaps one of the most prominent features of Barnsley is the welcoming and hospitable community spirit of the locals. The town's history, industrial heritage and shared experiences have contributed to the close knit community that values its traditions and deeply cares for its people.
