Rannva Kunoy

Born in Faroe Islands, 1975

Lives and works in London, England

Rannva Kunoy’s paintings play with the power of suggestion. Large canvases either in black and white, red, or strong yellow appear - first hazy and 3dimensional - a hint of something photographic. After a while things or shapes appear, the suggestion of a head, a foot, a mouth, only to slip away again. The works are held in permanent suspense. Kunoy’s paintings purposefully hold an uneasy space between abstraction and figuration, and the tragic comic. The human eye searches for its home, the face and figure, in everything that it sees. Her paintings take this rule and push it to its absolute boundaries, though what is also forcing the work at their back is the tidal push of the history of art. London based Rannva Kunoy’s paintings challenge and instigate, remaining ambiguous and open to various interpretations. The audience is captivated by the beauty of Kunoy’s paintings and their illusionary space that appears to be endless. Kunoy bids her audience welcome to embrace her work with their own experiences, since bringing their own experiences and interpretation to the work is just as important for Kunoy as what she herself puts on the canvas.
