new-google-logoGoogle announced a new look and new features for its flagship product -- web search -- Wednesday, including an update to its iconic logo.

The new version loses much of the 3-D effect of the current version, which uses drop shadowing to appear as if the letters float slightly off the page. The new version tones this down, and removes much of the color gradients on the individual letters. Simultaneously, the brightness of the colors has been bumped up.

Google said it was just time for something new.

"There is nothing wrong with the logo," said Google product manager Nundu Janakiram. "We wanted to brighten it up and make some tweaks to it."

We at Epicenter like the change -- it's both more modern and more reminiscent of the first Google logo.
