Esta exposición toma como punto de partida una serie de piezas que Per Kirkeby (Copenhague, 1938-2018) realizó en los años setenta, tras su viaje a sitios arqueológicos mayas en 1971. Formado como geólogo, Kirkeby comenzó su desarrollo artístico como dibujante durante expediciones científicas a Groenlandia a finales de la década de 1950, en las que representó valles, montañas y glaciares. Tales viajes pronto se convirtieron en un aspecto central de su producción creativa. Prácticamente en paralelo a esta formación, también formó parte de la Eks-skolen (Escuela de Arte Experimental), uno de los centros de formación artística más vanguardistas de Dinamarca en la década de 1960. Allí comenzó a experimentar con temas y técnicas pictóricas, así como con diferentes procesos y materiales, exploraciones que mantuvo a lo largo de toda su carrera.
A Kirkeby le interesaba especialmente cómo habitamos los terrenos naturales y los modificamos a través de la arquitectura. También consideraba cada tipo de construcción como una acumulación de capas materiales, formales y simbólicas. Metafóricamente, esto las asemeja a formaciones geológicas.
Esta exposición explora los diálogos entre sus esculturas de ladrillo, dibujos arquitectónicos y pinturas. Aparentemente minimalistas, las esculturas son exploraciones de la forma y la estructura, y de cómo caminar junto a ellas modifica nuestra percepción del espacio y la luz que las rodea. También son ambiguas en el sentido de que recuerdan a ruinas, pero también podrían ser construcciones inacabadas o edificios que surgen del suelo. Las pinturas, a su vez, con su factura casi expresionista, exploran cómo pueden representarse los paisajes mostrando sólo rastros de sus elementos, ya sean geológicos, acuosos, vegetales, o el movimiento de estos.
Al conectar la arquitectura, la geología, el tiempo profundo y la contemplación de la naturaleza, la obra de Per Kirkeby puede fomentar la reflexión sobre cómo nos relacionamos con los espacios naturales y el hecho de que nuestras acciones tienen efectos duraderos en entornos que han existido desde tiempos inmemoriales.

This exhibition takes as a starting point a series of works that Per Kirkeby (Copenhagen, 1938-2018) produced in the seventies, following his journey to Mayan archeological sites in 1971. Trained as a Geologist, Kirkeby began his artistic development as a draughtsman during scientific expeditions to Greenland in the late 1950s, in which he depicted valleys, mountains and glaciers. Such voyages soon became a central aspect of his creative output. Practically in parallel with this formation, he was also part of the Eks-skolen (Experimental Art School), one of the most avant-garde centers of artistic formation in Denmark during the 1960s. Here he began experimenting with pictorial subjects and techniques, as well as with different processes and materials—explorations that he maintained throughout all his career.
Kirkeby was particularly interested in how we inhabit natural terrains and modify them through architecture. He also considered every kind of construction as an accumulation of material, formal, and symbolic layers. Metaphorically, this makes them similar to geological formations.
This exhibition explores the dialogues between his brick sculptures, architectural drawings, and paintings. Seemingly minimalistic, the sculptures are explorations of form and structure, and of how walking by them modifies our perception of space and light around them. They are also ambiguous in that they are reminiscent of ruins, but could also be unfinished constructions or buildings rising from the ground. The paintings, in turn, with their almost expressionistic making, explore how landscapes can be depicted by only showing traces of its elements, whether these are geological, aqueous, plant life, or their movement.
By connecting architecture, geology, deep time, and the contemplation of nature, Per Kirkeby’s work can foster reflections on how we relate to natural spaces, and the fact that our actions have long-lasting effects on environments that have existed since
time immemorial.
