Who was Per Kirkeby?
Born in 1938 in Copenhagen, Per Kirkeby was a Danish artist whose academic background in geology and natural sciences had a great influence over his paintings and later brick sculptures. Fascinated by the capacity of structures, Kirkeby often produced his compositions through a mark making technique. As he once stated, “A structure-less painting is, to me, a painting that does not matter. Structure mirrors your degree of responsibility toward the work. You can't just let it float around in pretty colors. It needs a kind of core.”

Kirkeby studied sciences at the University of Copenhagen as a young adult, all the while pursuing his art practice by making various paintings, sculptures, prints and even films and performance art. His multi-disciplinary practice put him in contact with many different artists including Joseph Beuys, Nam June Paik, and Charlotte Moorman. Before his untimely death in 2018, Kirkeby produced many important works of art that are today held in some of the world’s most esteemed institutions like the Art Institute of Chicago, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Tate Gallery in London. In this collection, Singulart takes a look at a series of artists likewise invested in structure and its role as both theme and framework in the world of painting and fine art.
