Polychaete marine worm. Close-up of the tentacled head of a tube-dwelling polychaete worm. This species uses its tentacles to feed on phytoplankton during the summer season. Polychaetes are a class of annelid (segmented) worms. Each segment has a pair of fleshy un-jointed limb-like appendages (parapodia) which aid in locomotion and act as external gills. This specimen was found at a depth of 500 metres, on the Bellingshausen Sea continental shelf, Antarctica.
